Default engine removal without tranny question

97 manual integra.

In the process of taking out my block, i was wondering if i can keep the tranny in and take the motor out.

Also, the tranny mount holds the tranny to the chassis right? so i should just leave that mount on.

Another question is, do i have have to take the shift rod out if i just remove my block, not the tranny?

don't even try it. seriously one thousand times easier to pull it all as a package. with integras i'm a big fan of bottom dropping. you will want the matco shift pin tool in order to remove that linkage. you can go to matco.com to locate your local dealer.

I pulled my b18 out and left the tranny in. you leave the mount that is with the tranny. there is a hole in the tranny and you can see the gear, you have to hold the gear with a crowbar so it doesnt move while someone underneith removes all the bolts. then you just seperate the engine from the tranny by using a crow bar. just wedge it inbetween the crack.

its more of a hassle to unbolt the tranny from the motor when its still in the car then to just taking everything out

I usually leave the trans in the car. it is pretty easy to get the engine out of the car with the trans in. The problem comes when you are trying to get the engine back in. You will have to remove the crank pulley, the alternator, and the AC compressor to gain some extra room to maneuver the engine into place, at least that's what I did. But it does work, it's just harder.

you can remove just the engine, but removing the entire chunk is easier. if you want to go ahead with just the engine, recommend removing everything from the front and timing belt side of the motor. you need as much room as possible. you can leave everything on the tranny side alone. just unbolt the engine from the tranny and come out the top. people dont like doing this because of room due to the clutch. to make things a bit easier you will need something that could lift the tranny up a bit to make it easier for the pressure plate to clear the tranny. my opinion, drop the entire chunk.

so i decided to take it out from the bottom, leaving the tranny in.

1. i don't have a hoist.
2. the tranny, shift rod, and bitch pin is retarded.

seems good enough reasons.

it's seriously 1000x easier to bring the whole package out the bottom. the bitch pin isn't a bitch if you spend $20 on the proper tool to get it out.

http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/to...&page=3&#51164

see the honda pin tool for $25.25? that little guy makes getting the pins in and out simple.

now if you're broke, lazy or both you can pull it all by unbolting the rod at the shifter and bringing the transmission linkage out with the engine. if you do actually bring the engine out without the transmission you'll most likely be pulling the trans and bolting it up on the ground to go back in. ask yourself for a minute why you're hell bent on ignoring the advice of those who have been here before and have tried various ways of getting it out only to fall back to doing it all as a package not because we want to, but because it's really easier.

you can buy a hoist at Kragen for 80 bucks. That's what I did.

as far as the "bitch pin" goes look at this link

http://www.performanceforum.com/wesv...tch/bitch.html

seriously it is much easier taking the whole thing out. I have done what you are about to do TWICE and both times I regretted it when I was trying to put the engine back in.

That being said, it is possible to do it so good luck!

Thanks all for the advice so... im gonna

Put a jack with a woodenblock / or a big *** book (im guessing that will work) under the motor and transmission, and take it out from the bottom.

i'll let you guys know how it works out, thanks H-t.

good job on deciding to pull the motor and tranny out together... it would be a big hassle to align the teeth on the trans withn the clutch when putting the motor in while the trans is still in the car.. invest in tools man...who likes to work hard???... should look into even buy a hoist used on craigslist or something then buying a engine leveler from autozone for $40...i could put motors in less then 5 minutes ...also i had bought that shift linkage tool from matco and it was the best $25 i ever spent because it made all the motor swaps ive done a breeze...dropping the motor from the bottom will be a bitch when u need to put the motor back on the jack to put the motor back into the car.. u need a couple friends for that but i do all my motor swaps solo with a hoist...good luck in ur project

it actually isn't. you slide the engine under the car and use a hoist from the top to raise it in place. doing this avoids all the crap you hit trying to drop it from the top

if anyone has tried to install the engine with a jack.....man, that's hardcore...i wouldn't wish that on anyone
