HVAC controls are pretty tough to get out. The same bulbs you speak of are burned out on mine (emerg. flasher and 2 of the 4 bulbs in the HVAC controls). I just ordered replacement bulbs from Carland Acura (non-standard bulbs that come w/ plastic mounting bases, you pretty much have to order them).
To get the HVAC controls out, you have to remove the console and radio like you said. Then pry out the emerg. flasher and rear defrost buttons to access 2 screws underneath the 2 center vents. Next unclip the main HVAC harness from 2 places inside the dash (around and below where the radio sits, you can't pull the HVAC controls out unless you unclip this harness... sorry I don't have pics). Then unclip the heater control cable from underneath the glovebox. Now you should be able to pull the controls out and unclip the 2 plugs behind the controls. HTH
