Default check engine light?..no nevermind...WTF.

So I'm driving to work this morning.... everything is fine... coming off an onramp I floored it for a second or two...and yay, the check engine light comes on.

Then I sat in traffic at 20mph or less for a few miles.... until I got back off the freeway, to find that my magical new rev limiter was at 6500 rpms...and it didn't feel like vtec was kicking in either. So I'm thinking.... "great...now I get to fix some little pissant part somewhere".

Well, I turned off the car, turned it back on...and all is well again...car revs fine, drives fine, as if it never happened. My ABS light did this as well a few months back. I'm not particularly worried about it, but does anyone have any ideas or experienced this before?

Possible O2 sensor issue? Are you running rich at all?

not that I know of...I'll have to check the plugs again. Just recently (within a month) replaced the entire ignition system from the ignition module to the plugs.

PlastikOwl,

Dahm! I cant believe it. I got a 98GSR, stock motor with the exception of DIY intake.

About a week or two ago i floored my car and noticed the check engine light came on. It never turned off until the next day I drove (or it cud've been the day after that). Anyhow, so the light turns off so I think all is well.

Well today, on my way back from work, i'm accelerating (not aggressive or anything), but leave it in 3rd gear, got up to about 5K rpm and can't speed up anymore. My car kind of jerks around a bit...i let off the gas, accelerate again, and i still can't pass 5K rpm...Press in the clutch, rev it up, limited at 5K. Turn off AC, rev it up, still RPMs can't pass 5K.

Damn, i have no idea what the prob is. later (same drive) my oil light came on for a sec, but it turned off right away. I probably haven't changed my oil in like 10K

I haven't driven again since it's storming outside, but i'm kind of worried.

I'll probably check my oil little bit later and my plugs. keep you posted!

it's possible...I just checked mine like 2k ago....but perhaps I'll check it again just in case. Same situation with me..the ****** did it AGAIN on the way home from the grocery store like 20 mins ago. It doesn't seem to be running funny or anything, and both times it was on a slight uphill incline....I just don't know.

Edit: checked it... code 22 = Vtec pressure valve.... also checked oil and the damn dipstick was ******* dry...so I must be burning oil like a ****...although there's no smoke or anything....but I have a lead foot and rev it up top a lot....and I hear b18c's like to eat oil when you beat on em like that.

So...I'll top it off for now...get it changed this weekend and hope for the best....but for now..I have some searching to do

Whats wrong with you guys? My car doesn't leak or burn any oil and I still check it every week. You never know, anything could happen. Hit a rock and put a little hole in your pan and not notice the drip. Oil lights don't come on until its probably too late.

haha...yeah yeah...i'm bad to my poor teggy nowadays...

when i first got the car i used to love it to death...wash it all the time, change oil on time, etc, etc...as teh car gets older, i find myself neglecting it more and more

ok, just checked my oil and found out there is none! guess i shud have changed it about 6 months back...i'm a slacker i kno i kno

found 3/4 quart of oil in the garage...put it in the motor...still doesnt register on the dipstick...go figure it's only 3/4 quart...drive to closest gas station...buy 2 more quarts...go home...driving very very slow

put the two quarts in....got about halfway between min and max on the dipstick...take it out for a spin ....accelerate nice and slow...it goes all the way up to redline! woohoo! floor it again...revs up real smoothly to redline...ok this fix will suffice for now...oh yeah...check engine light is still on

btw, i checked my pan and my drain plug, no holes, no leaks. Car is garaged and no trace of oil on the floor. i prolly just burned it all off by not changing the oil for so damn long.

PlasticOwl..hope you find your problem...i'll keep you posted if my car does this anymore during the course of the next few days...

filled it up..was a quart or 2 low.... I must be burning a lot (no smoke) at high revs. No problems this time...flooring it up the hill up to 8k...no CEL. I think it was just an oil perssure issue.
