i heard a noise comin from my catalytic converter, it was like a faint whistling noise while the engine was idling after I drove it for a little while, when I just start it up I can't really hear the whistling sound. When the car was turned off i taped da cat and i kinda heard a little rattling noise. Is my cat broken, is there sumthin wrong wit it??

could this also be the cause of the rattling noise i hear @ 3k - 3.5k rpm???

also it's rusted out where it connects to the exhaust.

it's all stock and original parts(haven't ever been replaced)

 

Yea, it could be broken. I have had a CAT come apart inside and block the back out let after rattling for a while. Step on the gas and bogg like crazy. Another one I had broke the lip of the pipe near the b pipe. That one rattled alot at different RPMs. Get a replacement gasket for the rear seal (for when you put it back on or it may leak) and take it off to do the old shake it test.

Other things to check.... make sure the front spring bolts to the header are tight. And The heat sheild has caused some rattling before too (one on the CAT, one on the floor board). The floor board one could be lose and/or touching the CAT.

I have swapped mine several times. (borken CATS, test pipe, good CAT, etc...)

 

so u suggest i should take it off and shake it, and she if anythin come out of it, then it's broken? do u think it would be save to take it off b/c the bolts r so rusted, even if i use that spray stuff that helps loosen the rusted out bolts i could brake sumthin and not have a replacement to put back on right away.

by the spring bolts do u mean the bolts that bolt the header to the engine head?

Smack it with a mallet or something similar...if you hear the element rattling around inside, its probably in pieces.
