Default built head ?

I just got my 2000 ls and so far all i have is a CAI. My friend is swaping his motor and will sell me the head off his old fully built ls motor for $350. Its got about 8000 miles on it but its got crower 403's, springs, retainers, venom cam gears, 3 or 5 angle valve job ect... I am for sure buying it but when i get it i got a few questions?
1. Should I worry about buying a used head? He had it tested at a shop here and it tested out fine. I know that it sat in the garage for a while while the car was getting the body work done.

2. I do not have the money to get a header after getting the head so should i put on a stock type R exaust manifold that I happen to have or should i just wait a bit longer and get the header. I would think that the type r manifold would flow better then the ls.

3. Do you think by bolting on this head I could gain a good 25 hp?

Thanks for the info

1. if hes really a friend, nothing to worry about.
2. I guess you could use the stock type R but a 4-2-1 is better for the b18b's power band.
3. depends on quality of port/polish, but probably 10-20.

also, I know the honda head gaskets are 3 think. If you remove one it will raise the compression right? I know its not much but will it be more vonerable to blowing a head gasket or leaks?

they are layered headgaskets...but you cant just go removing layers like that. you can buy a thinner headgasket such as a mugen which will raise compression. mugen raises by .4.

put the head on your motor and boost it, LS's with opened up heads really respond well

Actually 403s w/ all the work AFTER major tuning I would EXPECT 15-20 hp but only if you have an SAFC (or some fuel tuning method) and chipped ecu (to max. power from the cams).

definately worth the 350 bucks if none of the parts are f'ed up. I mean brand new, the cams are 400, cam gears are around 200, and etc. not to mentio head work. If everything is in good working condition, then I think your friend is really hooking you up

I just talked to him about it and he took it into a shop here that he had build it and they took the cams out cleaned it, lubed and reinstalled the cams and fixed 2 of the cam bolts that were stripped. They said that it was in excelent condition and was ready to be put on a car.
