Is it bad to vtec if your engine is cold?
vtec shouldnt engauge if its cold, but if it was still able to cross-over then i dont think its a big deal. but reving that high w/o VTEC working probably isnt a good idea.
over all i just wouldn't run the car that hard for at least 5-10 min to make sure the oil is circulating correctly and at correct temps. Friction and metal on metal is never good.
just go easy on her especially if its cold

exactly! the ecu determines if vtec will kick in or not...therefore when you hit vtec you may think the cars cold...but its probably not...and within the first 5 seconds of your car running the motor has plenty of oil pressure not to damage anything...
for vtec to engage you need oil pressure, right coolant temp, rpm, engine load and speed, throttlle position. any one of these not ideal, vtec will not engage.
VTEC works off of oil pressure and water temp. Like said earlier if it crossed over then your car was at operating temps so its all good. Now if it wasnt warmed up and u went to redline with no vtec thats not good. Always wait till its warm to give it hell.
Exactly...water temp has to be up to normal operating temp for VTEC to engage. On a cold motor, no engagey.
To repeat what everyone else is saying...you really shouldnt run your car hard until it is up to normal operating temperature...

yes it is bad. you should really baby your motor if you decide to drive it cold, or just let it warm up a few mins. you didnt bust anything or damage anything, but the mteal is all cold in ur engine. everything is made of metal/aluminum etc. there is anti-freeze and motor oil in ur engine obviously. motor oil when cold, isnt lubricative as its supposed to be. think about this, water for example, would be frozen at 32 or below. well your oil wont freeze, however it wont be thin and free thus not efficient as to where ur engine is at operating temp. a gradual warm up is required. metal expands and contracts with hot and cold.
actually....V-TEC wont edgage unless you have enough oil presure..but no doubt its really bad if you hit VTEC and your oil isnt hot..therfore not protecting ur engine from wear...just dont do it anymore and youll be ok.

I had been over there for about 4 hours so i dont know if my engine was still warm from earlier. I turned on the car for about 10-20 seconds then just vtec'ed it to redline in 1st and shifted into second. I dont know why i did it... but im just curious is it bad for the engine if its cold and i vtec it? Could i have busted something(internals valves etc.) punching it like that when the motor was cold?

Not a wise decision... At all. REDLINE for a B18C1 is not a problem, except when its cold. Reving you motor cold means your reving it with out the protection of oil through out your engine. This could mean metal rubbing against metal which = DISASTER. Let this be a lesson for you, i personaly dont ever rev my engine past 3.5 when it is cold. When i first start it in the winter i let it run for about 30-40 secs so the oil can get pumped slowly throughout the engine before i start driving.
