Default Bad synchros...

How bad can faulty synchros mar gears? Can it be as bad as to take chunks out of the teeth? I am interested in a car but the owner says the synchros in gears 1 and 2 are bad and that they grind with hard shifts. Should I be worried about the gears at all??? This is in reference to an itr tranny

in extreme cases it could chip teeth.

no synchros in first gear because your not moving When you put it in first. I'd say 85% of Honda owners either have or have had a tranny that grinds. Most Of us just drive through it and buy another tranny when the money is good. If it grinds all the time don't buy it. If it only grinds when you are high RPM shifting then thats a different story.
On second thought he might be talking about the synchros from 1-2 and 3-4 . This means it grinds Second and Third. keep us updated.

i'm dealing with the same problem, normal driving its okay, but in high rpm's i usually grind on 2nd...its not all that bad for me, you should test drive it and see how bad the gears grind on normal shifts and hard shifts, see if it can be fixed with synchro mesh tanny fluid

beware synchro mesh is a "band-Aid" it will make it better for a while, but honestly most of the time it works for the time being and thats good enough. But yes i reccommend a Test drive, try and take it out without the owner if possible( You'd be surprised at how many people don't) but you don't know if you don' ask. IF you can drive the car kinda hard to see which gears grind, that would be your best bet.

yes, it is only at high rpms. I will be test driving it soon. He said it's from 1-2 and 2-3. He told me dd'ing is cool, it's only when you get on it. Either way, we'll see what happens when I drive it. I just wanted some opinions...and got them...Thanks guys.

Yeap see if GM synchro mesh friction modified could help. If its only grinding on high rpms then thats not soo bad but will need to rebuild or get another tranny after a while.
