Adjusting ignition timing question
Trending Topics
No problem. Make sure you jump that connector inside the car before you try adjusting it, that way the ecu knows not to adjust the timing while your moving the distributor.
I have 93 hatch and its a pain to get the service connector out. Any ideas to make it easier to come out?
Hey kaycee!
I tried adjusting my timing based on the diagram, but the only marking I could see was white and red. I advanced the timing all the way and I couldn't hit the 16 degree mark.
Any idea what is happening?

Its not..

If you look at the picture they used the red mark to show the middle notch. Thats not the oem paint they're referring to.
You should be able to see the marks even with out the paint as long as its dark enough outside. Make sure you jumped that connector, and are looking down at the arrow on the plastics at the right angle.
A) The upper white mark represents Top Dead Center (TDC). The
other marks represent 14 (green), 16 (white), and 18 (red)
degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center).

B) The white mark represents TDC. The red mark represents 16

while the lower is 18 degrees BTDC.

What degree should I follow? Should I just set on that red mark rather than what the timing gun is showing me based on? Also, I manage to jump the service connector so that isn't an issue.
Thanks kaycee for me out so much.
If you can set the actual timing number with the gun, your supposed to be matching it to the single white notch at the top (0º BTC).
If your gun just strobes at the crank you use the three notches to set the timing.

I adjusted ignition timing on both marks and i can feel a difference between the 2. The white mark felt okay when timing gun was set at 16 degrees, but as not as responsive with the red mark when timing gun was set at 0 degree.
Like there was a little power loss when set at the white mark and the red mark felt great, so I'm really loss as to what mark I should set it at.
Here is the specific timing gun I have:
Well if you set the gun to 16º then you line up the plastic pointer with the BTC white mark.
If you set up the gun to just strobe off the spark plug lead, line up the pointer on the plastic with the middle notch.
