Gas light?

I'm trying to do a gas mileage test on my newly acquired 97 SE Accord.. and the needle for the gas seems accurate and working properly.. but im unsure if the light is working because i'm at about 380 miles.. and the needle is about to be touching the very last line on the gas gauge and the light still isn't on.. Should my light have been on by now or do you have to really bury that needle before it illuminates?

congrats on the 100th post. Yeah i have the same question sometimes...i drove like 40 miles with the needle on E. Did like 115 down a highway and the light never came on...

Re: Gas light? (thatasiankidtony)

Well I got scared when the needle started to lay ontop of the last line of the gas gauge.. I went and filled it all the way up.. I was able to put in 13.5 gallons of gas as the pump did it's "I sense a full tank!" disengagement. So if we have a 17 gallon tank.. I could have easily driven another 60+ miles to make 440 miles a tank! And that was mostly city driving.. not bad for a 9 year old car https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

hondas gets more gas mileage as they age https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmileo.gif

380 in the city? thats amazing my civic cant even bust 300...then again it only has a 11 gallon tank

Tech-Nics 08-10-2006 11:29 AM

yeah....i ran my 97 accord lx really low on gas and the light didnt come on...then again i get very paranoid when running on low gas cause it could dirty up your fuel injector...but i know the light works cause before stating the car all the lights even the "gas" goes on before starting...

i dont know what the sensor is set at for the gas light to go on when you have x amount of gas left...but seems that it goes on when you are very very low....proberly just under that last line.

Re: (Tech-Nics)

i've had the light on all the way, not dimming in and out like it usually does when you get low.. and i drove for a good 30-35 miles before i could fill up. But you have to get pretty close to e for it come on

Tech-Nics 08-10-2006 02:10 PM

yeah i can tell by your avatar....heh

Re: (Tech-Nics)

Generally speaking, the gas gauge will almost point at the little gas pump symbol before actually running out. Of course, every gas gauge reads a little different.

How do I know this? All that time working at the dealership... Cars are shipped with only 1 or 2 gallons of gas in the tank, and some of the salesman actually would take the cars out for test drives without even checking the gas level first. Most made it back. Occasionally, some wouldn't.

Re: (Tech-Nics)

yeah I am use to getting 400+ miles in town about a mile above sea leavel, before the light comes on fully. Though I rearly drive on the free way, And only punch it two or three times a week. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Re: Gas light? (Diversion)

just for your information, ive been able to ride for about 25 miles with the light on, and my light doesnt turn on till half way through the red gas line. might want to carry a spare gas tank if you want to test urs tho. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Photik 08-10-2006 11:50 PM

for my car, the light works when i start ignition or whatever, but one time, my tank went empty and i was unable to start it.. stupid light didnt come on.. so im guessin somethings wrong somewhere.. ><

Slunk 08-11-2006 03:11 PM

Re: (Photik)

My light usually comes on with I have used about 14 gallons of gas. I guess we have 17 gallon tanks although the most I have ever put in was close to 15 and that was after about 50 miles of driving with the light on.

hondaccord 08-11-2006 08:19 PM

Re: (f22b2power)

everyone keeps saying that we have a 17 gallon tank, but I have ran it with the light jumping on and off over 50 miles.(with out running completly out) then filled it to the cap and it was only 15.x gallons.

philadd 08-11-2006 09:17 PM

Re: (hondaccord)

The light is supposed to come on (and stay on) when you have about 2 gallons left.

Diversion 08-12-2006 04:40 AM

Technically, in a perfect world, USDM regulations on a vehicle state your gas light should come on and be able to provide 60 miles (minimum) to get to the nearest gas station. I'm not sure starting what year, though..

Re: (Tech-Nics)

don't worrying about clogging your injectors when you run on low amounts of gas... the pump seep is located at the very bottom of your tank anyways, and it has a filter for small particles...

you are just a little too paranoid, but i understand, i paid for my car too. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

No you won't, and dont' ever try it. I know they say that we are supposed to have a 17 gallon tank, but we don't, not for the 94-97 years. You will only ever get about 14 gallons in it. I also tried for the light, and ran my car out of gas. I put a gallon in it, got to the station, and put an additional 13 in it. You only have 14 from E-F, you are asking for trouble if you try to see if you have more tank than that.
I have a 94 Accord LX

cambodian 08-13-2006 11:23 PM

i always think the same thing, im always runnin on E. sometimes my shit points below E! i haven't seen the gas light come on in a while so i sorta freak out

Diversion 08-14-2006 01:35 AM

Re: (Gen_X_Accord)

Are you sure we only have a 14 gallon tank? All OEM sites and car sites all say the same thing, 17 gallons. I have yet to see any documentation tell me differently.

WRONG.... We have a 17 Gallon Tank. I actaully put 15.3 gallons (Cost almost 50 bucks https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif )in mine yesterday. That was after driving for about 30 miles with the gas light on.
