R's been eating oil......
i have 55,000 miles on the clock of my 2000.
i've noticed for about the past 10,000 miles i've been having to add oil every 700-1,000 miles or so. i use probably about 1 quart total within each 3,000 mile oil change interval.
i do drive hard, and mostly highway.
i did a tune up about 15,000 miles ago including plugs, fuel filter, car/rotor, etc.
also, i use 5W30 Mobil 1 oil.
is this normal oil consumption for an ITR, especially since i'm using Mobil 1. I've heard the ITR likes to eat it up.
also, if this is the case, would switching to Amsoil help any?
thanks y'all!

i wouldnt say its "normal", its not SUPPOSED to eat oil like that. There are lots of us in here that have that same problem(myself included), but there are others that dont go through much at all even on track days. I think I know the reason my car does it, its my own fault and probably because of my build up. If your R is mainly stock bottom end, then you might have a problem worth looking into. Search around, there have been lots of these oil eating threads. Just be sure to carry a quart of oil in the car at all times.

it should not hurt, 10w40 should work better, if not 15w40.. my car would eat 5w30 during this weather while 10w40 wouldn't burn until like 1K miles.. i'm at mix of 10w40/20w50 right now and 20w50 at next oil change (valvoline brand for right now).. my **** is boosted and turbo+hwy its a bit much..
i'm using conventional oils only.
if it doesn't help, then only replacing seals might help.. it could be piston rings just wearing down or.. valve seals..

My R is the same on oil consumption. Amsoil isn't much better than Castrol GTX in a 5w-30. I tried 10w-30 Amsoil and It seemed to slow the consumption down a little, but for some odd reason my car felt a little sluggish.

I've heard a lot about people burning Mobil 1 SuperSyn in their ITR's on this board...dunno, why though...my ITR didn't burn it off when I had it in there for 3k...I changed to Amsoil and I'm never looking back...
10w30 for summer....definitely....I'll give up a few horses for the added protection.

I switched to 15-50 M1 and I'm still burning oil,,, 1/2 quart in 200 miles of street driving.

I use to use Mobil one, now i burn about 5-6 quarts every 3,000mi . Car has 93,000mi of hard abuse, but that is a little much. Compression still checks out good, but the R is fixing to go under the knife for a rebuild here VERY shortly (just waiting on my JDM ITR pistons). My next set of rings will never see a drop of Mobile one and the car will be broken in hard.

Amsoil or Redline are both great oils and perhaps a bit of a step above Mobil1....
As to why it burns off...some oils just burn off easier than others...I forget what they call it, but I remember that Mobil1 was rated pretty high...

Re: (MAD ITR 55)
I guess im not the only one then. I found this out last night since I recently purchased my GSR, I had no idea. I did my first oil change on it about 2500 miles ago and yesterday after it threw code 22 (vtec oil pressure switch ).
I checked my oil and it was very low. Luckily I had half a court of mobil one left over and now it's ok but I will be doing an oil change soon. Don't know exactly what to use but I gotta go through a few changed till I find the right one I guess.
Edit just saw link above, cool...ill be giving that a try also.

Yeah, like everyone's saying, you shouldn't worry. My old one used that much. My "new" 97 with 30K will burn that much this cycle. When I got the car with 25K six months ago the original owner ( an "old guy") used regular Castrol organic and it consumed NOTHING. I put Mobil 1 in 1,500 miles ago and it's down a half quart. Exactly what I expected.

i had the same problem when using mobil one supersyn 5w-30...burned about a quart between oil changes... so i switched to Castrol Syntec 5w-30 and haven't burned a single drop since.

For those of you using Mobil 1 and having problems - I asked about the oil when getting the car serviced (Ferrari dealership) and found out that while it was supposedly better, it wasn't recommended because of burning above 5-6000rpm. Just thought I'd let you know it's not just a problem for ITRs.
