Honda: How to Reset the SRS Light

The SRS light may indicate a problem with a sensor in the steering wheel, seat, or onboard computer. But even if you discover the reason for the problem, the light does not reset itself. Learn how to do so here.

This article applies to the Honda Accord (1990-2002) and Honda Civic/Del Sol (1992-2000).

The secondary restraint system, or SRS, is a safety system in your Honda that controls the airbags, among other things. You would imagine that when the SRS light comes on, that it would be a big deal and need to be checked out immediately. That's partially true; however, having the SRS light come on during Honda ownership is almost an expected thing. Having the SRS light come on is so common that the original owner's manual actually gives a briefing on how to reset it. To do so, you will be "shorting" the system in order to reset the light.

Materials Needed

  • Insulated piece of wire, SCS service connector, or paperclip

Step 1 – Locate the MES

Locate the MES (Memory Erase Signal) connector. It is below the dashboard on the driver’s side of the car plugged into a panel (there is no electrical connection).

Step 2 – Short the MES

In this step, you will internally make the connection in the plug to “short” it. With the engine ignition off, connect both sides of the plug with a shorting wire, such as an SCS service connector, an insulated piece of wire, or a paper clip.

Step 3 – Cycle the ignition

  • With this connection made, turn the ignition key to the "on" position (do not start the engine). The SRS will illuminate for two seconds, then turn off. When the light turns off, disconnect the shorting wire to un-short the circuit.
  • The SRS light will turn on again. When it does, reconnect the shorting wire. The SRS light will turn off. Disconnect the shorting wire. The SRS light will blink twice indicating the SRS system and the light are reset.

Pro Tip

If this procedure is followed correctly and the light remains on, then there may be an actual issue with the SRS system. In this case, it is advised to bring the vehicle to the dealership, where the trouble code can be identified and the issue repaired.
