Default Civic Trunk Release into Del Sol

I sure was annoyed with having to open my trunk with my key every time, so I figured I should put a trunk release lever. I took the release lever and cable out of a 95 LX that I have sitting around (used it for transmission swap) and everything fits up to the Del Sol trunk lock. Just took out a lot of panels, ran the cable and it clips right into the trunk release switch.

Taking off Rear panels

Taking out trunk carpet and plastic retainers. You do not need to take out the release mechanism, you can see right up under neath it.

Boring old gas door release

Underneath view of cable into release mechanism

Like it never even happened!

New levers. Yeah, they're brown.

I at least painted the cover

All done! There is a little gap between the carpet and the cover that I want to fill in. Any thoughts on what/how to fill it?

Nice job!

There were sols made with these installed.. I think post 95 SI and VTECs.

Are you saying the gap in the floor mat?? cause I can't see the carpet (at least in the last couple pics)

If you mean under the levers, I'd just take a lil piece of road-kill or something like that, or ask of a piece of sample carpet, cut and glue in place, then put the levers back down..

Tho, with the mat in place, again, I can't see it, or the need for it.

Thanks! I figured the later models had them, and it's really the small things that make the biggest differences. The gap I'm talking about is between the sidewall carpet and the left side edge of the lever cover.

well, the easy way like I said above, is to just take a sample or remnant and glue it in place..

The HARD way, but the way to do it if you want a "show" car, is to replace the carpet. Its not really that hard. Take the consoles, side rails and seats out and put it in place. I did it to my dads sol. He got one with extra padding underneath, so it didn't need road-kill. I forgot who made it, but it was only around $200 total. Also, its ALMOST pre-fit, you just have to have new blades in a utility knife and trim a few places up.

All depends on how annoying that lil gap is to you Good luck!

(you can also get it in different colors like red or blue, but he went with charcoal or black, i forget the exact term they used.)

wheres the "like" button? i am parting out a 94, the no interior trunk latch is a MAJOR design flaw on these. as if the targa removal procedure wasnt already painfully slow, honda decided that "fumble with keys" was a necessary step in these early models.

This is very cool.. Glad to know so many parts are interchangeable. Did you know in other countries the del sol had the option of a power storing feature!!?? There are youtube videos, it would open the trunk from the window side, a power unit would raise up, literally grab the panel, slide it inside and then lower into the trunk, trunk would close! But here in this country we had to "fumble with keys" as eghatch said it perfectly! ugh!! cheap!! glad to hear it's fixed now, even if it doesn't match up to the carpet perfectly.

Thank you for all the positive feedback! In response to JarvisW, I took the lever cover from the civic and I didn't pay too close of attention, but I guess it's just that the carpet in there sticks out farther than on my Sol. To oneheadlight, the Trans Top is what you're referring to. It's very cool. I'd feel like my car was a Transformer if I had that. But, it's seriously not hard at all to get the lever and cable out of the the parts car. Personally, I knew the car was getting scrapped anyway, so I just a cut line through the carpet all the way back, but it's really close to the edge of the carpet, so you could probably just pop the plastic panels off and peel the carpet back. I also took the seat out to have more room. What are some other "modern" features that you would want in the Del Sol? I love things like that. Even it's small. I've been considering installing the remote power locks.

Also, if you guys want more details on how to do any of that, just let me know. I honestly didn't think a lot of people would see it, so I just did a quick run through. Most of it pretty much explains itself. The only "tricky" part was getting the lever mechanisms off before I realized the lock cylinder just pops right out, exposing the second bolt. Just pry up on the plastic ring around it and it'll come out.

I said that here years ago and got laughed at!

But in Texas, you NEED a drink with you at all times in the summer!

This is what I got:
Amazon.com: TSI Products 35101 Black Wedgie Cup Holder: Automotive Amazon.com: TSI Products 35101 Black Wedgie Cup Holder: Automotive

It fits between console and pass seat. Thankfully I don't have too many passengers, or I just put it behind the seat, or in the trunk before hand.

I'd like to glue some huge magnets or something to it so it would sit a lil furthur forward and still be removable. Prob is holding a large coffee or something could pop it loose. Also thought if you cut vents into the cup part, it could cool/heat the drink depending on what the A/C was on! In that position, the vent would be behind, blowing thru the cupholders.

If I ever try it, I'll make a thread for it.

I've been thinking maybe something like a Saab cup holder? Mounting it right below the AC controls. I would want it to swing out towards the passenger side, so that it wasn't so much in front of by radio or possibly hitting it with the shifter.

I'm pretty sure there's room for that in the dash.

Nice! Tho, I like a phone holder in what I have.

And Yes, there is room in the dash, I can even take pics tomorrow of the back of a loose one tomorrow if you want.
