We have added a NEW Q&A section at the bottom of this first post...
************************************************** *******************************

PROGRESS Tech reintroduces the popular CS-II coil-over system

Are you looking for a value-priced and proven coil-over system for your 1989-2000 Civic or 1990-2001 Integra? These new systems have been redesigned with improved shock dampening rates, modern foam-type bump stops, and less part content for a simple and durable sport suspension system. This is a perfect system for street performance, new track day and autocross enthusiasts, as well as project cars with engine swaps.

Should you decide to try some different spring rates, these “standard” 2.50” ID coil springs are easy to find and cost-effective. The new damping rates have been successfully used with spring rates up to 600#/inch! In the event of a damaged shock, replacement dampers are available for $73 each, if ordered directly from us.

We now are listing EIGHT SPRING RATE COMBINATIONS for our Competition Series II (CS2) coil-over systems for these popular Honda/Acura platforms.

Here is some help SELECTING YOUR SPRING RATE combination, all are noted by (front/rear):

D-SERIES/Single cam applications
***************************
350/250
Best ride for a daily driver (DD). Great for commuting. Front may bottom out if set up too low.

350/350
Good compromise, less understeer & more fun. A modest concession to ride quality. This may be choppy for some drivers with short wheelbase models; Civic Hatch and CRX.

350/450 or 350/550
Minimal understeer, quick turn-in, less roll, fast & fun, good for drag launch. Rides rough on bumpy or poor roads.

B&K-SERIES/Twin cam applications
****************************

450/350
Best ride for a daily driver. Fun and well-mannered. Modest understeer. Recommended for street/performance & daily drivers.

450/450
Good compromise, less understeer, less roll & more grip.

450/550
Minimal understeer, awesome handling, quick steering response, good for drag launch. Rides rough on bumpy or poor roads.

550/550
Good for track cars equipped with a front end spoiler or splitter. Also for street cars running super-wide wheels & tires and low ride heights. At this point, you should know you are signing up for a huge compromise in ride quality. Very stiff!

MORE DETAILS ABOUT THESE COMBINATIONS:
*************************************
** STREET-PERFORMANCE
FRONT HEAVY SETUPS (350/250, 450/350 etc.)
Good for Daily Drivers (DD), poor weather and road conditions because these setups do not upset the ride on the highway and during cornering. The softer rear suspension tracks nicely and rides better because it is more compliant. These calibrations ride well on uneven road conditions if set up at a reasonable ride height around 1.0” to 1.5” less than OEM (12.5”). Expect a dramatic improvement in handling capability and steering response. These setups will still have some mild understeer, less than OEM but still easy and forgiving to drive every day and in all weather conditions. This is the choice for sport-tuned Daily Drivers.

** STREET-SPORT
SQUARE SETUPS (350/350, 450/450 etc.)
These setups are a compromise between ride quality and all-out handling. Some impact on ride quality makes for less understeer and faster vehicle response. The stiffer front springs also help prevent bottoming out. This combination is plenty stiff, and NOT recommended for true daily drivers (TDD?) on poor roads, or drivers rolling a lot of commuter miles. Good for “fun cars” driven by more experienced drivers.

** AUTOCROSS-TRACK & DRAG SPECIFIC
REAR HEAVY SETUPS (350/450, 450/550 etc.)
Much more aggressive. This calibration has more grip, and is intended for use with “performance/track” alignment settings and sticky tires. If ride quality is a major concern, don’t go here because the stiffer rear springs make for an uncomfortable (and choppy) highway ride. This is a more balanced and LESS FORGIVING setup intended for enthusiast TRACK days and AUTOCROSS events. These combinations will also launch well for mild drag applications on DOT tires. Expect a HUGE improvement in handling capability. This would also be a great low-budget setup for new (road racing) drivers going to a (track) DRIVING SCHOOL or TRACK events.
Faster chassis response, less forgiving, and MAX GRIP in most cornering situations. The chassis balance will be very close to ideal, having minimal understeer with “track-oriented” alignment settings and good UHP tires. This is a BIG compromise in ride quality and will require more DRIVING SKILL to drive at the limit (on the track please!) NOT RECOMMENDED for wet/snow/poor weather and road conditions.

ALWAYS CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
* Primary vehicle use
*Secondary vehicle use
* Weather and road conditions
* Driver skills & experience

THE DEAL:

************************************************** *********************************

We have taken some common Q&A found throughout this thread, edited it slightly, and have re-posted it here to help save you some time and searching. We hope you find it useful. If you have any additional related questions, please call, PM, or post here on this thread. We will do our best to answer your questions. Here we go…

How low can I go with a CS-II coil-over kit installed?
These coil-over systems are designed to operate at 1.0"-2.5" lower than OEM. We would encourage you to review the instructions, and pay close attention to Steps 16 & 17 regarding setting the ride heights. The instructions are available on this page:
http://progressauto.com/products/sfID1/133/sfID2/34/sfID3/89/productID/779"]Progress Technology: Anti-roll bars, sport springs, coil-overs, camber kits and more since 1995!

Take a tape measure out to your car and measure the front fender-to-the-center-of-the-wheel as shown on Step 17. The ideal ride height is between 12.5” and 11.5”. Do not go lower than 11.5”. Within this range, the ride quality and handling will be optimized. Any lower will cause excessive bottoming. These dimensions apply to both Civics & Integras.

How do I adjust the ride height?
The spring perches (the aluminum "collars") are not shipped "in exact position". There are packaging issues, and too many combinations to attempt this. Setting the ride heights is a simple (& fun) matter. Leave the locking fasteners loose, & you can quickly jack up one end of the car (use jack-stands please!) and adjust the spring perches, lower the car and roll it out a few feet, then measure again. A corner balance is NOT necessary. Actually, a corner-weighted car will frequently set uneven, in order to achieve the ideal "corner balance" settings!

The threaded sleeves are 16 threads to the inch, so you can just count the threads below the perch and match the left and right sides. You will be able to quickly fine-tune the vehicle height to exactly what you want. After setting the tires back on the ground, roll it back and forth three or four feet to “settle” the suspension, and let the tires “roll out” to a stance like it has been driven. Using a tape measure, measure the fender-to-the-center-of-the-wheel distance at all four corners (as shown in Step 17). Adjust each corner until you are within the ideal “sweet spot” between 12.5” and 11.5”.

Expect a lowered range from -1.0"-2.5". You may want to “personalize” your tuning, and set the ride heights to work with your tire clearance, or a poor section of road, or steep driveway that you need to deal with. Generally, lower cars like smooth roads, and you can use higher settings if you have some bumps and a lot of potholes to deal with. Do not go lower than 11.5”. Within this range, the ride quality and handling will be optimized. Any lower will cause excessive bottoming. These dimensions apply to both Civics & Integras.

Help me decide what spring rates I need from the three options...
Street or Sport?
“My 1995 Civic HB is a daily driver that never will see competitive racing, but I, of course, would like something that would offer the greatest handling and ride characteristics.”

350/250 rides the best (obvious, I guess).
Some of your decision-making should be based on the miles driven per week, is the car a true daily driver or a fun car? The other big factor is your geography and road quality. The stiffer 350# rears are a nice upgrade if you are in CA or AZ, but may be too much of a compromise if you live in a place like MI, NY or WI with poorer road quality, lots of pot holes and long frozen winters.

Spring tuning is really about compliance, which means making the setup soft enough to keep the tires in contact with the road surface. Road racers run (relatively) softer springs on rougher, bumpier road courses, just for this reason. And, hence, stiffer springs work best on smoother courses.

Think about it!
The 350f-250r setup will be approximately TWICE your OEM rear spring rate. This is a "sporty" street tune, and is far more rate than most "sport-line” performance springs on the market today. Going to 350f-350r is +100#/in. more rear rate, and yields better handling balance (less under steer), and consequently less ride quality (it's choppy on rough roads). Your road quality, miles driven, and driving style are big factors here when making a tuning decision.

Each street setup will benefit from a rear anti-sway bar, our 22mm (#62.1003) is a great street anti-sway bar. This minimizes body roll and dials out most of the under steer, and is easy to drive in hard corners. Another topic I should mention is wheel alignment. A Honda suspension installation needs a well-executed 4-wheel alignment for proper driving and tire wear. See further below for some alignment suggestions.

Autocross set-up suggestions?
”I have a 95 Civic DD, and I am considering doing some autocross events. Should I go 350/350 or 350/500? I feel that I can deal with a pretty firm ride. What would you recommend?”

The best CS-II autocross setup is 350f/500r. The car will rotate at the "turn-in" better than the 350/350 setup. Add our 24mm adjustable rear bar (62.1001) and you will have a (very) aggressive DD-AutoX car. You do not need to go any stiffer than 350 in the front for your application with a D or B series engine, unless you have a real good reason for doing so. The car will also track better over bumpy courses and poor DD road situations if you stay with the 350# fronts. If ride is a big concern, go with 350/350. You could also purchase two pair of rear springs, 350s and 500s, for an extra $96.00 plus shipping. Here's a link:
http://progressauto.com/products/sfID1/14"]Progress Technology: Anti-roll bars, sport springs, coil-overs, camber kits and more since 1995!

Pounds/inch to Kg/mm conversion
It has been a common request to compare metric spring rates to US units, so here are a few conversions for your reference.

250 #/in. = 4.5 kg/mm
350 #/in. = 6.3 kg/mm
450 #/in. = 8.0 kg/mm
500 #/in. = 8.9 kg/mm
550 #/in. = 9.8 kg/mm
600 #/in. = 10.7 kg/mm
650 #/in. = 11.6 kg/mm
700 #/in. = 12.5 kg/mm
750 #/in. = 13.4 kg/mm
800 #/in. = 14.3 kg/mm
1000 #/in. = 17.9 kg/mm

To convert #/in to kg/mm, multiply by .0179.
To convert kg/mm to #/in, multiply by 56.

All about top hats
Are top hats included with the CS-II kits?
No. The system is designed to use the OEM (black) top hats. Remove and reuse them. You may download the instructions and review the installation here:
http://progressauto.com/products/sfID1/133/sfID2/34/sfID3/89/productID/779"]Progress Technology: Anti-roll bars, sport springs, coil-overs, camber kits and more since 1995!

Why are the OEM hats better?
The stock OEM top hats allow more compression travel than the common “pillow-ball” type top mounts. This means better ride quality, and no rattles from loose-fitting metal top hat bearing assemblies. On these Honda applications, the top of the dampers do not see any significant side loads from cornering, so the rubber bushings we supply work great, and they are nice and quiet.

Do you sell the OEM black top hats?
No, re-use yours or locate a used set of four.

Why do I need the black stock top hats?
Our CS-II coil-over kits use the OEM top hats (4 units needed), because this improves wheel travel (compression) for improved ride quality and less bottoming, when compared to the "pillow ball' type mounts used on many imported (Asian) coil-over systems.

Should I install "extended top hats" with my CS-IIs?
No. Extended top hats were developed to improve the suspension travel for OEM length damper units (like Koni street units). The CS-II damper units have shorter-than-stock housings and shorter shock rods. Extended top hats will not function correctly with our Honda coil-over units.

Suggested alignment settings
Any performance suspension installation should always conclude with a performance-oriented wheel alignment. Ideally, your alignment settings should be more than just “setting to factory specs”. Here are some GENERAL suggestions…

Performance “street” daily driver:
Front camber -.75 to -1.50 degrees
Front toe .06” to .13” toe in (total)
Rear camber -1.50 to -2.00 degrees
Rear toe .06” to .13” toe in (total)

Notes: These applications need some negative camber to drive well. Rotate your tires (front to rear) at every other oil change for best tread wear. The fronts will always wear faster than the rear tires, because they are doing most of the work while stopping, accelerating and cornering.

Beginning Autocross:
Front camber -.2.00 to -3.50 degrees
Front toe zero" to .18” toe OUT (total)
Rear camber -1.50 to -3.00 degrees
Rear toe zero” to .13” toe in (total)

Notes: Set the corner weights at 50% cross-weight with driver in place and the rear sway bar end link disconnected, as a good starting point. Adding spherical replacement lower control arm pivot bearings, a pair of rear adjustable upper links and rear toe-links are the logical steps for the next mods. Often we find the OEM rear t/a bushings are worn out and torn. Inspect and/or replace the rear trailing arm bushings with our #11.1003 polyurethane replacements. They are a big improvement over the OEM replacement units. You can fine-tune the car (trackside) with camber, toe, and air pressure settings. Consider buying this book if you want more information on chassis tuning. It is a real bargain for $20.

Hands down one of the best suspension and best company to buy from.

I have a set of the older aluminum body series I coilovers and they have lasted since 2003. Spring rate and damper are perfectly matched for an amazingly balanced ride with sporty performance.

Anything for drag set-ups?

I have a set of your Drag series 1 coilovers on my race car and it is very high quality and works great. I am looking for a set-up for another car that I am putting together, but on a tighter budget.

Everyone who is looking for new or replacement coilovers should definitely give Progress a call. Great customer service and very helpful, knowledge people over there.

site says these will adjust from 1" - 3" but i guess the "sweet spot" is at a 1 - 1.5 inches of drop ... what kind of ride could i expect if 2 - 2.5 inch drop was dialed in?? at that height would you say stiffer springs would be needed?

VERY interested in this promotion!!

Willis, thanks for your interest. This kit will ride better than other kits using spherical bearings on the top hats (most current kits with replacement top hats). Our kits use OEM hats, and our housings are 30mm shoter than stock for more suspension travel at lowered ride heights. This has been the case for many years, and we have not really promoted the "shorter than stock" issue for some time.
We hope this helps you make a decision...

Please note that the more popular kits that include spherical upper bearings take up some (about 1.0" or more) suspension travel, hence the suspension travel is reduced.

There is no issue swapping the 350# F-500# R spring kit. The front and rear 2.50" ID coilover springs (as supplied) are interchangable. The spring perches can be adjusted to work with your configuration. Same kit, same price.

Thanks for your interest,

By "adjustment", I mean only the height adjustment of the spring perches, to tune in the vehicle height. No other changes are necessary. These dampers have been develped to work within this range of spring rates.

Easy!

Our damper housings are (about 30mm) shorter than OEM. The rod is also shorter than OEM. I see no benefit in running another confuguration top hat. We designed the strut with to use the OEM top hats.

The issue that MAY arise (if the extended hats are used), may be that they COULD reduce the necessary DROOP travel (extension) too much. This is only a thought, as we have not needed to go this route. The CS-IIs have plenty of wheel travel, if not lowered beyond about 2.0" or so. I hestitate to post this "2.0" number, as we have a wide range of road conditions, and some owners need more travel than others...
