my accord needs new tires. it has 15x8 wheels. i have a full set of 195/65/r15 and was wondering if those would fit. it has 195/50/r15 on it and they are wore out.

The car dictates the tire size more so than the wheels chosen. Without knowing what year/model Accord you have, it'd be difficult to give an accurate response.

What year Accord? Also, what have you done suspension wise?

As far as fitting on the wheels, they can fit.

Excuse me for wondering, but how is that information relevant considering the widely differing ranges of tread width based on the size you gave? I've been doing more research for my next tire setup, and from what I gathered the tread width matters more than the size.

First off, the tire size I mentioned only has one tread width (225mm). As for my recommendation, tires are rated for certain ranges of wheel widths (when referring to tire sizes). The OP asked for tires to fit his 15x8's, and both the tire sizes he mentioned are only rated up to a 7.5" wide wheel. The narrowest tire he could run for that wheel (per sizing recommendations by the tire manufacturers) is 225. I don't understand what you mean when you state "tread width matters more than tire size" since tread width is a part of sizing a tire.

He's trying to be clever since he just figured out that 2 different brands can have wildly different sized 205s.

IE - the 205/50/15 RE71s are 7" wide of tread, while the 205/50/15 Dunlop Z2 is almost 7.5" wide.

Trying to be clever? I fully admitted that I'm new to this, and I'm trying to gain the best knowledge I can with the help of other's expertise, hence my question asking him to clarify.
Yes, I was getting at the fact the number on the tire rating doesn't actually equate to it's tread width.

If I were to go through the process of memorizing every single tire size of every single make/model of tire out there... I'd have a more definitive answer on exact specifications for a specific tire/wheel combination. But, because tire sizes are always changing (even for the same model tire and different runs through the molds)... its nearly impossible to do so. Going by the fact that tire manufacturers produce safety specifications for the tires they produce and the standards never really change for what wheel widths they are rated for, makes it a fairly safe judgment call on what kind of information to provide to users with tire-size questions. If that's not good enough for you, you're going to have to spend a LOT of time measuring all possible tires that you are looking to purchase and seeing what suits you best.

PS. You never admitted that you were new to this in this particular thread.

My mistake then (on the last part)

I've been using Tirerack's handy dandy spec sheet that shows tread width of the tire using their standardized measurement they apply to all tires sold there. That could be helpful if the OP sees fit in using it. As an aside, I've seen some differing tire models within the same manufacturer (Toyo r888 vs r888r for example) that have different tread widths within the same base tire size category. FYI, the tread width is just a measurement of the tread face, so section width is actually more effective to use for fitment, at least in the wheel wells. Rim Width Range is what you use to check if the tire will safely fit on your wheels. Now, if you're looking for the most rubber on the pavement, then that tread width measurement may come in handy, but the rubber compounds tend to have more of an effect on traction than just the "amount of rubber on the ground" so keep that in mind when you're searching for the right tire for you.
