weight vs traction
 

ok so im set on rota slips... 15's

they come in 6.5, 7, 7.5 , and 8

i ruled out 8 and 7.5 and cant decide wether i should do 6.5 or 7

6.5 is a full pound lighter each, so i guess my rambling question is, for the sake of a four pound weight loss should i do 6.5? is unsprung weight that detrimental? im wanting to run as wide a tire as possible but considering its just a civic i would think that a 205 on a 6.5 wide would look nice and be enough. but the 7 would accomadate a wider tire like 215 or 225....

It depends on the year of your Civic.

If you have a pre-'96 Civic, you need 195/50-15 tires. If you have a '97-00 Civic, you need 195/55-15 or 205/50-15 tires. In both cases, tires are approved for rims 5.5-7.0 inches. I wouldn't go any wider than 15x6.5.

why do you need a 195 for pre 96. ive always ran 205 50 15s and now am running 225 50 15s up front

Several reasons:

- Oversized tires make your speedometer and odometer inaccurate (by 5.4 percent in the case of the HUGE 225/50)

- Oversized tires make your car accelerate slower (it's like getting taller gears in your car)

- Oversized tires may rub on your wheel wells (I'm surprised if your 225/50 don't)

- Oversized tires cost more.

- Personal opinion, but they look pretty silly, don't you think?

And on the street, there is no significant performance advantage to oversized tires.

Bottom line - lots of reasons not to, with no significant reasons to use them.

Stick to 195/50-15. They're the same diameter as the stock tires, and there are lots of good tires available in that size.

so lets say your runnin about 400 to 500 whp would you still go that size or would you go a little bigger?

^^^ well that is the reason for me running a larger tire.

I would still go that size. With that much horsepower, I would just spend more for the best tire I could find. In 195/50-15, that's the Goodyear F1 GS-D3.

Remember, if you want more traction, concentrate on getting better (stickier) tires, rather than larger tires.
