Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
i didn't miss it the first time.
it doesn't answer the question.
the tire's section width is over 8" wide (regardless of its nominal size).
the side wall has less than a 1/2" drop to the bead.
unmounted, the beads sit nearly 7.5" apart.
so, my question remains, by what process does the tire perform better on a wheel that is 2" narrower than the bead spacing at rest, than it does on a wheel that is 1/2" wider than the bead spacing at rest?

But, ignoring all of our guesses, a tire manufacturer will want to sell the tire to as many people as possible (simple business logic there). This logic states that they would never limit their potential sales by placing a width restriction that their own testing didn't mandate they needed for safety purposes.
The companies engineer and test with safety outside of perfect circumstances in mind. They know what is and isn't safe for their tires much better than any of us here do. Trust their numbers, they'd be sued out of existence if they didn't do their homework properly...

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
exactly. just take a look at any tire companies size charts
most 205/50/15 tires are approved for 5.5-7.5inch rim. this rim size keeps the tire within a safe operating range, where it will perform the way they intended it to, safely. you might say oh another 1/2 inch is nothing. but that will put the tire outside the design range that the manufacture considers safe. it can put excess stress on the sidewall, and prevent it from mounting fully on the rim. if you want to use unapproved rim sizes, then do it at your own risk, and know that driving it on the road with other drivers is extremely unsafe to them, and is mainly why most of us do not condone doing it.

About the same diameter, approved for 7" - 8.5" wide wheels.

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
This was dead for 6 months and then brought back to life-ish so hopefully 3 months isn't a big deal. It all depends on the tire size but at least the Falken Ziex ZE-512, Kumho AST & ASX 205-40-16 are approved for 7.0-8.0" wide wheels. Their 205-45s are only approved up to 7.5". It'd be nice if people would actually get the facts before hating on people for "stretching" a 205 onto an 8" wide wheel when that's the upper limit that the tire manufacture recommends.

A 205/50-15 is stretched when put on a 15x8.
16s were never part of the conversation.
It would be nice if people actually bothered to read to "get the facts" before jumping in and throwing out completely irrelevant information.

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
DO NOT RUN A 205/50 on a 8" RIM!!
You will have tire stretch like others have said, 205/50/15 and 205/45/15 tires can be only used on a rim up to 7.5".
You need to run 205/40/15 in order to be considered "safe".
If you decide to stretch tires, look cool with the rim lip sticking out yet run through $1000 of tires every month and possibility of killing yourself then you go do so at your own risk!

Depends on the tire. Not all tires are equal in the same specs.
Id say visually the 195/55 Dunlop here on a 7" wide wheel is stretched about the same or more than the Kumho on the previous page. (Limit for Dunlop, over the limit w/ the Kumho)

Its all relative when dealing so close to the advised limits. I have 205's mounted on 15x8's and am not worried in the least.

Kind of right. There are given limits to what tyre width goes on what wheel width, each manufacturer gives there own and the majority will say no to your sizes......
Except Falken who are happy for you to put a 195 on an 8J even. Its in the limits they give for their own tyres.
Go figure

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
Nobody can discount 949Racing's experience on the track and they're ok with saying 195/50 and 205/50 can be used with their 15x8 wheels: http://949racing.com/15x8-6ul-nickel.aspx
They even mounted them to show it's fine (albeit with beefy tires).
If you buy quality tires then you'll be fine, especially if you just daily them. The people who have accidents are the ones who buy the cheapest tires, overstretch them, don't maintain them or replace them when necessary.
