15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
i'm sorting out the suspension on my 3rd gen prelude, and i've had good luck with 195s, but i'm wanting more tire.
i've got a line on some 15x8s +36...and another guy has some take off 205/50s. measurement wise, i've got the room in the car for these, but i keep hearing 8 inch wheels are too wide for 205 tires.
anyone have an opinion on the fitment?

wow..8 inch wide and a 205 tire wont be safe. you'll have to stretch them..which is a stupid idea. Cop the wheels and look for 215/50/R15 bruh

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
so a 205 would perform properly on a wheel that's 2.5" narrower than the section width, but not on a wheel that is almost exactly the section width?
is there a functional explanation from any of the tire companies for that?

compromises sidewall strength among other things. the beads have to be within a certain range inside the overall width of the tire for the carcass support to work properly. dont forget that an "8 inch" rim is actually 9 inches wide.

i'm with you so far.
what if i'm dealing with a tire that's larger than nominal?
i've seen some seriously wide 205/50s and some relatively narrow 205/50s.
the kumho xs for example, is a pretty beefy tire. the firehawks i used to run were tiny by comparison.

ull be fine on a 205 with a 8 rim.
alot the higher end tires, such as azenis, star specs, bfgs etc, their 205 tires are more like 215s, so keep that in mind.
stratton.

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
ive had 2 sets of 195 50 15 tires on my 15x8 rims one set stretched perfect and one set didnt stretch at all. it also has to do with brand. 205 50 15 wont stretch on a 15x8 rim unless its very cheap

Except Falken who are happy for you to put a 195 on an 8J even. Its in the limits they give for their own tyres.
Go figure

Because those tires aren't stretched. Those were surely manufactured that way to enlarge the sidewall for better handling.
There's no way in hell they deliberately stretched tire sidewalls to fit on wheels like all these kids are. I've seen plenty of photos and my mechanic has even bit hit on the highway by a kid whos stretched tires on his hellaflush civic burst at the sidewall and he lost control.
You think those stretched sidewalls can put up with the extreme forces, high temperatures, and high stress from 150mph+ road racing? They wear out prematurely on our econobox civics on daily driving.

Re: 15x8 wheels 205/50 tires?
i get why i don't wanna stretch an 8 inch tire on a 10 inch wheel..
i'm trying to get someone to explain why i shouldn't mount an 8" nominal wide tire on an 8" wide wheel....especially when it's a big 8" nominal tire.
i don't understand why this is either dangerous or will cause the tire to perform poorly:
but cramming that tire onto a wheel that is 2 and half inches narrower will result in a better performing tire.
