rack and pinion fab?

rack and pinion fab?
I work in a fab shop as a welder but I am not a machinist at all. I can bevel pipe and cut grooves and thats about it. my question is about the difficulty and complications involved in fabbing a steering setup to make steering more responsive and aggresive ( more wheel turn per revolution of steering wheel ). Has anyone ever done this before? Could I just fab one to match old one just with bigger teeth or more teeth on a bigger pinion shaft? On that thought could I keep the stock rack and shaft and just make a shaft from th e steering column with a larger gear but still have teeth that mesh with the factory shaft???? Any input would be very helpful. PS I wouldnt be making this I would have the machinest @ work do it, just to avoid confusion.

Re: rack and pinion fab?
They make a speed increaser commonly used on late model style stock cars. It mounts between the steering wheel and the steering box/rack. They come with different ratio's also. Speedway Motors would probably be a good place to start or stock car products.
You could also change the length of the steering arms but that takes some know how.

Is this for a Honda? You know you can buy quicker racks from Quaife. If you search in the road race section there is a lot of topics on racks and cool stuff like electric power steering.
Don't forget a steering quickner!
