Re: Pics of your tig torch setup :)
This is what I use for all steel, stainless alloys, and inconel alloys.
Small gas lens, #12 cup. White scotch brite held on by a ss ring, usually run 35cfh.
Only time I change my setup is for welding aluminum.

Would the smaller gas lens with the #12 cup function and provide as good gas coverage compared to the larger size/diameter higher flowing large gas lens with the #12 cup?

I personally never got great results with the #12 on the medium gas lens. If you ever saw the flow from a gas lens, it comes out like a "tube" of gas. So if the cup size gradually increases, I don't see how that would work. That's my guess as to why it doesn't work as well.
Maybe that's why you guys are using extra diffusion? (the scotchbrite),.

Re: Pics of your tig torch setup :)
if anyone has time i dont have pics but try this. I use a small gas lens and take a #12 big cup turn it around and the small part of the cup will slide snug over the cup you use. i use a #8 then i put a piece of white/green scotchbrite inside the cup where the threads are and it holds it in place without falling out. I run 35cfh also with perfect coverage. wish i had pics to show. all in all got around 8 bux into it instead of 30 for a big gas lense or champagne nozzle for 80.
p.s all done on a wp20 torch body

I first started with a brass screen pushed inside the cup. It was ok.
Then I switched to white scotch brite. Better.
Finally scotch brite over the outside as shown. This worked the best.
Its the diffuser that's doing all the work. You want the gas to have the least amount of turbulance with the most coverage.
It works great, I even use it on welds that get radiographic inspection. Excellent on tight areas/joints as you can stick out the tungsten quite a bit.
If it made my welds dark/black, I wouldn't even be running it. I'm not that kinda welder

Re: Pics of your tig torch setup :)
with a #12 I've tried 15-25cfh and my welds were always really dull and gray. So I stuck with my #8 and my welds are fine? weird

I use a #8 cup 30-35cfm 90% of the time w/ perfectly fine results in my opinion. Control your heat, travel speed, and torch angle and most your problems will solve themself. For the new guys in my opinion throwing on a huge cup is just a bandaid to poor habits/technique.

Don't get me wrong, I get great results with the #12 on the LARGE gas lens, but not on the medium one. I don't believe a cup with a larger outlet than the size of the screen inside will ever be able to give you the results you get with the large lens. (Unless you run another diffuser at the end like the white scotchbrite posted above.)

Did bit of welding today and found out that 9 l/min (19cfh) works best for me with normal tungsten stick-out. SR9 Torch, large gas lens, cup #12.

Little update on my gas flow. With my #12, I normally use 15cfh for normal stick out on just about everything, and 20-25cfh for excessive stick out.
But, today I was welding some really thin stainless with normal stick out and 15cfh just wasn't enough. 20cfh worked much better and got me the color I was wanting.
I normally just try to use as little gas flow as possible to save argon.

Re: Pics of your tig torch setup :)
I had to get one of those champagne cups after seeing everybody had one. First weld turned out ok but its a little strange moving with such a large cup when im used to micro torches.

Re: Pics of your tig torch setup :)
I feel like i would get better coverage with a straight barrel large
Cup with large gas lens instead of flaring out to a largr size. It doe work fine for what it is.

Where did you purchase the champagne cup/lens pictured?
