Hobart makes good equipment.

Never used a Hobart Plasma, But we have a mig and love it.

But if you want a good plasma... Hypertherm is the way to go!!!! We have the 380, and even though it's only rated for 1/2" Sever Cut, if the machine doesn't have to peirce the material to start (ie drill a starting hole or start on the edge) it does a clean cut. We've cut odd ball turbo inlet flanges with it with MINIMAL die grinder cleanup.

i suggest if your going to buy a plasma and plan on cutting with it, to get torch. you can make good cuts with it and use it for other things as well. the plasma manily just cuts stuff

Plasma cut nicer, cooler, and does aluminum.

Torch, you have to have skill to do a real clean cut.

Main concern is parts availability on consumables. If it is a pain to get the right electrodes and nozzles try a different brand. Hypertherm is an excellent machine though.

i have the miller spectrum 375, which is pretty much the same as one if the hobarts. i love it. used it for something on my truck axle last weekend and it worked great.

Very happy with the hobart Mig we have.
We also have a miller spectrum 175 and it's really too weak to cut anything other than sheet metal...
