My first downpipe *pics*
I was using the internal gate from a .48/.60 T-bird T3 so I had to cut the cast exhaust housing in half and weld my pipe on. Where I cut the housing is not even close to circular, here is a pic of the pipe kinda tacked up. I went to the local exhaust shop and called 5 "custom" welders in my area and none said they could weld cast to mild steel. What a bunch of pussies. Keep in mind this is my first time welding and I'm using a crappy fluxcore welder https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
http://img231.echo.cx/img231/1756/downcrap3xv.jpg I flattened out some spare exhaust pipe and flattened it and made 2 pieces to fill in the gap on each side. Here are the finished pics (minus the O2 bung) http://img25.echo.cx/img25/5954/dp18kw.jpg http://img25.echo.cx/img25/3824/dp20vf.jpg http://img25.echo.cx/img25/509/dp30rk.jpg I know it looks like crap but it's all sealed up https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif |
i guess its ok for the first time....need to smooth out the insides....so it flows better
|
Re: (blahhhhhhhh)
Yea I am going to take the dremel to the inside of it tommorow to smooth it up a little.

Re: (AWDspyder)
Yeah, I think you should take it to those 5 local pussies and tell them to learn how fucken weld! Your da shit dood! I need to get some lessons from you!

to bad you where no in milwaukee i would have welded that up for you for 5 bucks.
|
Re: (andy6789)
that does look awful, lol, hopefully it holds and doesnt leak for you though
|
Re: (andy6789)
Or If he was near Racine I could have tested out my new Miller 210 on it https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
|
the welding needs work.
should have practiced on scrap first. welding to cast is also not such a hot idea unless you preheated it and cooled it properly. which i doubt you did. props for giving it a try though, i hope it stays on for you. |
Don't take offence but it looks as though you have very little penetration.

Re: My first downpipe *pics* (jagojon3)

j/p man...good work on the DIY! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Well at least you had to the balls to do it. It WILL crack but at least you can just weld it up again.

I don't think that will crack, it will just fall off LOL...I think he may of been smoking crack when he did that lol. But I'll give it to you for starting out trying to weld cast. Modified by dragline at 4:44 PM 6/27/2005 |

Wow. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmileo.gif
Did you try welding that up with the cigarette in the background and a coat hanger? |
Re: My first downpipe *pics* (backpurge)
My welds are by no means beautiful.
But it looks like a dog actually chewed that thing together. |
Re: My first downpipe *pics* (beepy)
Gotta do what you gotta do I guess. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: My first downpipe *pics* (snowseeker)
fuck you all. throw a layer of JB weld on it to ensure its all sealed and be done with it. Just my $.02 https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif
|
Re: My first downpipe *pics* (beepy)
problem is that cast iron and steel have slightly different expansion rates. This means that the thing will crack pretty quickly. You should support the downpipe by attaching it to the block in order to avoid damage to your engine when it falls off.

Ghetto fabulous
I hope its not a load bearing structure in your turbo setup https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif |

Just make sure to have a flexpipe downstream before the cat and it should hold. Otherwise, throw another layer of slag on top of everything and JB weld it smooth. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Re: My first downpipe *pics* (Finest)
