Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
If my memory serves me correctly a fab company in Cali used to make a complete replacement rear crossmember. Area 51 fabrication I think.
I am pretty sure they are out of business but at least if you find some pics you could get some ideas. |
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
perhaps you should reconsider this option. considering how many drag cars that are out there, and how many continue to use the rear xmember as stock, you could most likely fix the problem through other avenues such as improving the stiffness of your other mounts. in other words, could the problem be weakness in another area which is manifesting itself as a rear xmember problem?
if not, support like a bridge underneath the xmember would suffice. http://htmlhelp.com/~liam/Ontario/Ni...nbowBridge.jpg |
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
The mount have been stiff to solid and still the same issue. I have braced this in certain areas with strong bar and still have the issue. But one thing that does bug me is that there are alot of drag crx out there making 800 Hp and not having this issue. So what is it that im doing wrong? Not sure but i do know i want to make a solid one so i dont need to think about it any more.

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
what do your other mounts look like? not the actual motor mounts, but the double shear they are mounted to. any cracks or anything? i cant imagine that you are bending your rear xmemmber without fatiguing those connections to the frame.

There is nothing that stands out. None of the welds are broken and every thing is on its place. I have even made a front mount to replace the oem Tranny mount like the single cams.

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
what is that attached to below the radiator? diameter/thickness?
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
i made one for my crx, but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit your car.

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
WoW.... Hows that going
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
so a 1.75in .083 chromoly if i remember correctly. the support you have should be enough there. only other things i could think of are gussets to support the passenger and driver side mounts in addition to structural support on the rear xmember. good luck.

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
So you think maybe the side mounting brackets are moving?
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
well, im assuming. if you have solid inserts in your mounts, and your rear xmember is bending, i can assume there is movement elsewhere. perhaps your passenger and driver side mounts have stripped out of the tranny and block...just throwing out ideas :)

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
I have check this. Even with the front Traction Bar with the Front Tranny mount it was still bending. I looked at the traction bar and it is pulling at as well. So other than the obvioius that the motor is rocking back its seems to be rocking prety hard to pull the traction bar up as well. When looking at the Rear Memebr its hard to see how i could put some square tubing across it to take beating. Any ideas how it would work?
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
in addition to gussets on the mount brackets, id try something like this if i only had box tubing available...if clearance allowed. simple.

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
Yes I can see that. The Steering Gear Box Is in the middle of it and the xmemebr is hollow. This is what im looking for any more ideas from anyone. Also i dont mean to sound DUM....B But what would the gussets look like

Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
Just a thought: There might be some angular issues in that front mount. It pivots at both ends, depending on where/how the motor is rotating that arm might allow a bunch of movement. Would replacing the heim joint at the top of that mount with a static bracket help?
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
Like you said they are 700+ Crx's all around using the stock crossmemer, your front mount looks perfect for strength and rigidity
Id like to see pics of your side mounts if possible Maybe your original xmember is just rusted and old and a new oem would suffice? |
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
WreckedRex I think you are talking about the front tranny mount correct with the Heim Link. But not clear on the angular issues. Are you talking about the bearings in the ends and how they allow play and that they may have movement in them allowing the motor to rock?
Vaitarian i will take some pic tonight and post them. Keep it coming i really appriciate the help |
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
have you taken the traction bar off to see if it is bent?
|
Re: Custome CRX Rear Cross Member From Scratch.
You dont have to take it off to check if its bent....

Yes the bar has bent. Looking at the picture you can see the tighter i make the Heim Link to pull the motor down the more it pulls the Traction bar up. I welded some strong bar on it to stop it from bending next time but i believe im going to replace it with some square tubing like the rear member.

Some Pics of the Rear xmember. I welded some strong bar to the point i believed needed to be supported from the looks of the memeber that bent before this one. But as you can see it the pictures it was not enough. The rust is only from it sitting out side after it was taken off beacsue it was bent. As far as i can tell there was not rot in this xmemeber before it was installed or after it was taken off.
