Building a 12V generator

I would like to build a 12volt generator using a small quiet gas engine and a spare alternator.
I was thinking of using a spare Honda alternator, and a tiny two stroke engine such as one from an old weed wacker. I would make the appropriate mounting bracket and pulley
also use a 12v battery as the power supply with the alternator charging it.

I'm just unsure of the load the alternator would put on the tiny engine...will it be powerful
enough? Has anyone done this?
I want to use a two stroke because I need this to be light and portable

Re: Building a 12V generator

thats a good question i too would like to build something similar.. but my idea was to attach it to the car so it also runs off the engine..

just remmember that pulley on the alternator even at idle its going pretty close to 1000 rpms... so the two stroke needs to be able to do better then that unless u put a smaller pulley on the alternator and a bigger pulley on the two stroke..

I honestly cant give u an answer cause i dont know but i want to help with this little bit.. and i would like to see what happens....

I say look up the specs of a conventional generator and look up the specs of an alternator to see what u need.
