Stock 97 Accord differential problems
I'm working on my brother's 1997 Accord LX, bone stock with a manual. It was making a horrendous noise similar to a bad axle. Sure enough the axle on the passenger side had a torn boot. Replaced it with a reman and the noise remained. Pulled both axles and put the car in fifth up on a lift. Lots of noise from the tranny only when in gear. I figured either the tranny or the clutch was bad at this point. Pulled the tranny, clutch was fine. Pulled the tranny apart to find nothing abnormal except a tremendous amount of slop in the differential. We ended up getting a tranny from the bone yard with 103,000 on it. Put it in and there is still a noise, only when turning and mostly to the right (when the left side is loaded). I thought perhaps a wheel bearing at this point, but I didn't feel any slop in the hub assembly. The original noise has reduced greatly, but when I'm hard in a turn I hear what seems like the tire rubbing a splash shield or a mud flap dragging on the ground. I know they aren't because it only makes this noise in gear around turns. If I'm in neutral, nothing. I'm thinking I've got a trans with a differential that's starting to go. Any thoughts out there? Money is tight for my brother and I'm trying to get this resolved cost effectively. I could put in a new LSD, but that's a little to much money. Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Stock 97 Accord differential problems
Upon further review I believe we've had a combination of noises and so we are going to replace the carrier bearing and both axle bearings. The car has over 200K on it. I'll keep everyone up to date on this and let you know how things work out.

Those Accords had problems with the carrier bearings. Hope the bearing houses in the tranny cases were not damaged!
