spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
what are your opinions?
any one in the heater other parts of the usa or the world using anything specific? did a 20 min search and cusco and a few other names were mentioned along with the addition of a few cap fulls of friction modifier. another point that was made, was the fact that chatter seemed to be an issue as well. any input on normal daily driven conditions and highway use?(not racing on highway just commuting) |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
For daily driving, I don't think the ambient heat will be much of a factor.
You shouldn't be able to feel the diff on the highway. Are you currently experiencing loud chattering at lower speeds on the street and just trying to figure out how to subdue it? If so, what fluid are you currently running? For a street application, Torco MTF and a bottle of their type F friction modifier would be my recommendation for a clutch type diff. |

it's Noisy with low speed turns, Don't drag race it lol Ask me how I know lol

The entire bottle is only about 4-6 ounces. Yes, the entire bottle.

Going to give lucas 75w90 a test run. J Tran studios has a tech that's been running the shit in his car for over 20 years. He changes it out obviously but he swears by it. So what the hell....right? Lol

Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
syncromesh and half a bottle of the friction modifier.

Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Ok so I got the lsd into the car....And it jerks whenever I turn. I did some figure 8s thinking it would fix it. No dice.
Forgot to put the speed sensor in and the car crapped half the oil I just put in. So went back and got some royal purple and just put a bottle of that back in. I cut up an old speed sensor knowing the stock vss wouldn't work just to cover the hole. Got back out and did some more 8s and still jerks mid throttle. So I went back home and jacked the car up and spun both tires to see what would happen. Both spun the same way. Now upon driving to and fro I also noticed the car pulls to the right when ever I step on the gas. Any ideas? Once I let off it straightens back out. Never was an issue before the lsd was installed. Once I got the car back Down, I jacked up the pass side and spun the tire. It was somewhat hard to turn it by hand but I managed to do so. Probably about 35/40% effort got it to spin by hand. Any ideas?? I don't want to ruin a good lsd. Even though I have another. |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Sounds like torque steer...
Is that not what it is supposed to do? |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Not sure. It's to the point where if I let my hand go. The cars headed to the right.
|
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Motherfucker!
I took the car for a spin to down town and still no dice. So what happens next?? I pop the friggin hood only to see(from a weird assumption) that the drivers side cv axle came out from the half shaft! Luckily I'm right across from a friends house here in down town and he was nice enough to lend me a hand and a jack...And a towel and an extra shirt lol. Hopefully this fixes everything. If not, back to the drawing board. Could a loose cv axle be the reason why the car would pull to the right if the left ones loose? I'm assuming so. |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Well scratch that idea. Either there's supposed to be a little play in the half shaft to cv axle or there isnt. But there is. And I busted a boot too. Fml. And now there's a clunking noise like something is loose but everything's tight.
Back to square 1. Mission tear down the trans is a green light....As soon as I get a day off. |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Now when ever I turn the wheel to the left it makes the jerks ng noise. Almost like a busted cv axle but it's not.

Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
This is how clutch type LSD act.
Get used to it. |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Friction modifier as discussed before.
|
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
its not just that. its as if almost its unbalanced. the whole car somewhat shakes when at partial throttle. also it almost seems like the steering and the car ricochets from left to right looking for traction/direction to drive in. its weird
|
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Unless it's shimmed improperly, that's how it's going to act.
My ATS LSD sounds like a broken axle at partial throttle if I turn the steering wheel. If I go wot, it's a thing of beauty - hand of god pulling me around the turn. The locking ft-lb is like 90, so that makes sense on a torqueless honda right? |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
locking ft-lb?
|
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
Or lb/ft if you prefer that terminology...
You can check the amount of lock by jacking up both front wheels and putting a beam type Tq wrench on the axle nut. Then turn it and see what Tq is required to lock and turn the other wheel. |
Re: spoon clutch type lsd and daily driving....in texas heat
oh. both tires spin at the same time when i have the car jacked up. the same direction too.
but when i let 1 side down and spin the other side, it takes some force to spin the tire. |
