Default second gear whine

ITR tranny second gear has a slight whine, no other forward gears do it. it dont seem to do it when decelerating in second only when accelerating. recently switched my trans fluid to GM SM friction modified, i was told that second will whine on a ITR tranny due to the final drive , but i thought all the rest of the gears should whine equal why would second be louder?

Sounds like an individual roller bearing issue to me, like Mista Bone mentioned.

yes needle bearing...only bearing isolated to 2nd gear (countershaft).

When they said roller bearing, I took it for the type of ones in the cases.

LOL. Yeah. I meant to say needle. Regardless, they are both caged needle bearings. The diff bearings are just set at an angle vs. a cylindrical.

Aren't the new B diff bearings ball-type too? I wonder if they switched the H22's to them also..

The LS and B16 from what I've seen are all closed ball bearings.

The GSRs and ITRs switched to the closed ball bearings somewhere around 96-98.

Never pulled an H-Series apart yet.

when in second gear, the roller bearing under the countershaft second gear would not be moving, therefore cannot WHINE.

Two things.

Either due to the gear pitch the whine is normal, or first or third roller bearing is at issue.

ok that makes sense since that the 2nd gear engaged is spinning at same rate of countershaft speed since it's locked via the hub/sleeve. if it's not the pitch noise, that would leave not just 1st and 3rd needle bearings to question, but 4th and 5th as well...no?
