To rebuild or not to rebuild?? GSR
Picked up this gsr trans a while ago and one of the bearings took a crap in it i guess, I have never used this trans and was wondering if I should go ahead with rebuilding it, I was planning on getting new syncros, bearings, lsd the whole works. Im not sure if the gears are worn down/damaged to much what do you guys think? This will be my first trans rebuild so im a noob.

Rebuildable, yes.
Will it be cheap? NO!
3-4 combo, 5-R combo, ISB and seals, 1-2 slider, lots of deep cleaning.
I'd guess easy $500-600 in parts.

I would give everything a good solid cleaning. It makes it 10x easier to check for wear. When parts are dirty it tends to give a false reading. From what I can see its going to run some $ to get it back in shape. I would also not run that 1st gear in addition to what bone suggested. Check the rest of the forks to see how they clean up. They should measure between 7.4-7.6 mm. If under those parameters...replace them.

They are pretty smooth, would rubbing/sanding them with something like a scotch brite polish them up a bit more or would that not be good? overall though I think they feel pretty good

I prefer 120 grit flapper wheel in an air grinder to debur the sliders and hubs. It's not very agressive so you really have to try to mess something up!

Re: To rebuild or not to rebuild?? GSR
Ok I might try and polish them up a little then, I sprayed the gears down yesterday until I ran out of brake clean and carb cleaner but they did clean up a bit, I have yet to completely disassemble the main shaft waiting on some tools to arrive first but after cleaning these so far look the worst to me. I also measured the shift forks and they are within spec.
Reverse
1st/2nd slider
1st looked pretty rounded
5th/rev slider? this one looks quite nasty has a bunch of small metal pieces ground into it
Sorry about the crappy pics they are kind of hard to see, I will tear down the rest of the mainshaft and post my findings.

The 2nd gear teeth on the 1/2/R sleeve don't look too terrible but it's hard to see. They seem to still have a fairly decent point to them. Can't see 1st. Reverse is pretty beat up on it, so you may want to just replace anyhow.
3/4 hub is scored. Can't see 3/4 sleeve teeth to make judgment.
5/R sleeve should be replaced due to 5th gear wear.

Re: To rebuild or not to rebuild?? GSR
Got some tools today so I pulled apart the mainshaft not looking so good
And this bearing feels like it welded itself to the shaft I put quite a bit of pressure on it and it didn't budge at all, sprayed it with pb blast and ill let it sit overnight.
Overall its looking pretty crappy I think, but I do have good news I should be picking up 2 GSR gearsets tomorrow and hopefully I can make one good one out of them all.

That thing has had quite a bit of heat through it. Looks like somebody thought MTF was just a suggestion. That C-shaft looks unusable. Hopefully the two extras you are picking up have some usable parts in them. I would pretty much bet on the fact that you are going to be buying a 3/4 slider set, as rarely is it that I find one not abused thoroughly. We seem to not understand how clutches work when we beat the **** out of these transmissions.

Re: To rebuild or not to rebuild?? GSR
Picked up the box of FREEBIES!!!! today, was told they were parts from 2 gsr tranny's
Layed out most of the stuff, counted the teeth looks like 1 is a gsr and 1 is an ls no big deal
This mainshaft looks quite a bit better, I have to clean everything up still but I think I should be able to piece a good trans together.
