how i installed an lsd in a crv awd transmission...
this is a rough aspect of how i modified an H/F series MFactory helical lsd to work in a crv transmission... i am not a machinist, just a redneck from georgia that builds rock crawlers and like's hondas... lol... i talked w/ steve, i think, from syncrotech transmissions, they set me up w/ a smokin h-t discount as well as a full set of carbon synchros... he was insiteful and very passionate about helping w/ my questions as well as advancing our sport... i highly recommend them for any of your needs...
i would like to keep this thread about the discussion of crv related parts... im sure if you are reading this then you are aware of the mild complications of using civic awd parts... i am planning some out of the box ideas on making the rear crv diff work as well, i will update this thread as i go on that as well...
i began this venture w/ the assumtion that all b series internal were the same, so i went head first on the awd swap into my ek... i had trailing arms built, rear diff mounted, fuel cell fabricated... every detail was working out as planned and then i hit a wall... the diffs are different... i was ready to abandon the whole thing... i mean i already had 2wd w/ an mfactory lsd, i couldnt imagine not keeping it... so after asking around and doing all the research i could, i found that it seemed like no one has ever put an lsd in a crv tranny... i went to quaife's website and they have full schematics of all of there diffs... so i printed off everything that had the correct spline count and armed w/ a micrometer i went to the shop... much to my surprise, i found that everything accept the ring gear offset was correct on the H/Fdiff... so i came up w/ using a spacer to get that offset back to spec...
my build thread... https://honda-tech.com/forums/forced-induction-16/ek-sleeper-top-mount-back-door-ic-c-2976240/
the car
here you can see the offset difference... my measurement was .248" difference, as you can see here...
this shows the different carriers in the case, note, this is a stock h/f cariier showing the offset w/o modification...
stock crv
stock h/f
this was another hurdle... w/ the offset the bolt heads were going to be close to the gear... i turned down the back side of the carrier down about 1/8" and ordered new bolts w/ thinner heads... plenty of clearance... no pics of it installed, but here is the stock h/f carrier and stock bolts...
here is the back side of the lsd turned down...
next was getting the pilot on the carrier to center both of the crv gears and now a spacer... the pilot on the mfactory diff was only machined for one gear, so we turned a shoulder on the lsd where there is a cast taper... then we built a new ring spacer thing and then turned it all down to the same diameter... we did a .006" sweat fit on this piece to keep it from moving... now there is a constant diameter for all of the gears to center up on...
here is the spacer we built... it was laser cut from .312" steel and then the major diameter and minor diameter machined and then it was surfaced to .248"
final assembly...

I wish I would have looked more into this when I did my trans. I had to buy a new oem diff for mine. Very good right up man.

Great Job! More to it than I would have thought though... Now if only somebody would manufacture this for us lazy people out there... hmmmmm They might be able to make a little profit.

I love it. You certainly have a lot of resources at your disposal. What do you do for a living? I assume work in the industry.

Re: how i installed an lsd in a crv awd transmission...
all i can say is bad f*cking ***!!!! i couldn't be more pleased w/ the performance of this setup... i mean this thing hooks so hard it feels like its ripping the pavement up... i have not played w/ the dampening on the shocks, and im sure i can smooth it out some... when i brake boost in 2nd and let off it will try to hook and then it wheel hops pretty bad... its a really strange sensation, to much traction in a honda on the street w/ regular street tires... i will play w/ the boost by gear to get it dialed in a little better and w/ less power i think it will be even better... 1st gear pulls hard and i can def hear the rear tires spinning, lol... 3rd gear is absolutly insane... just a little chirping of the tires when shifted hard fron 2nd...
there are no vibrations at all... if you didnt know it was awd, you couldnt tell... the tall shifter is nice... i dont think im going to cut it down, im just going to get a short throw kit that bolts to the bottom of the shifter... i am stoked... i have a TRUE street car that looks bone stock and gets it the f*ck on... thanks for all of the comments, it is certainly nice to share a project w/ people who can appreciate your work...
i used an LS gear set for 5th gear, this required some grinding of the shift fork as the syncro collar is a little bigger, this took me 5 minutes to modify and i would highly recommend going through the trouble...
5th gear is a nice addition... this would normally be at 3700 rpms... i am hoping my fuel mileage goes up, 25mpg's isnt bad, but its not that great either... time will tell..

That's because most engineers don't modify things to make them work together. They just redo the design to make something new that works without modification. Hence being an engineer.

Dig the fact this car looks stock....I would always rather have a ballsy stock appearing car than one that looks fast but has a stock single cam in it! Good job to you dude, its amazing.

I doubt it... all internals are h/f... call David at synchrotech, he knows his stuff and was very helpful with hybrid questions...

Hi
David from ST directed me to you and your great thread.
I would also like to put H22 LSD in my CRV manual 5 speed trany.
Any chance you help me with that work for LSD???
I've just sent PM
