Icon3 help? transmission blown?

okay so I took a day trip today and my car had been pretty much fine all day except for a few days ago my boyfriend said it was jumping gears and there's some strange noise when I put on the brakes he said it was some sort of Axel. I apologize for my horrible terminology because I do not know a thing about cars except driving and putting gas in. anyway so when leaving the parking lot it started kinda jumping and acting like it wasn't going to go and revved a few times like it lost power but it kept going. well I pulled out and started up a hill and the whole thing just gave up and it revved. no power at all so I coasted backwards and got parked and ive tried it in reverse, neutral, drive, drive3, and 2 and it all just revs as if its in neutral. the guy that stopped to help said he was mind blown because it was idling fine and had no noise when it revved. any ideas on what happened?
**BTW its a 2001 Honda civic ex**

The transmission is most likely toast.

I would deem the clutch as dead before the transmission. If there is no grinds, funky noises, oil leaks, or gears not going in, the trans should be fine. Try to drive it forward and backward and watch out for a burnt clutch smell. Hope it helps.

^ OP appears to have an automatic, so no clutch.

check to make sure one of the axles hasn't partially popped out of the tranny, what condition are the cv joints, I've seen them lose all the ball bearings in one with a torn up boot and of course then the car will do this

if an axle popped on automatic it would go nowhere (no fluid ad open diff). check the fuild level, if good then the tranny is proably toast.
