Default Hard Shifting Into Fifth

I've done some searching without finding any examples where someone resolved this issue. This is on a '91 A1 cable tranny.

- Had this problem with the tranny that came in the car. I just replaced it with a used one in good condition, and still having the exact same issue

- Shifts into all gears including fifth no problem when not driving

- While driving I have to go very quickly from 4th to 5th and push hard to get it to work, and still half the time it just goes into third

I had thought this was a problem with the old tranny, but since that has been replaced, I am focusing on the shift lever. Any idea what parts in this assembly I should be looking at for wear or try replacing? So far I do not see anything that looks concerning.

16, 17, 18 and 29 have all been replaced and are new.

Can anyone help guide me in the right direction on this issue?

I plan to start disassembling the shifter this weekend to see if I can find anything obviously wrong.

How much fluid did you put in it?

If its shifts into 5th fine with the engine off it probably isn't a shifter/linkage issue.

That seems logical. I'll play with it some more tomorrow, maybe the way I shift when not driving is different somehow.

I find it hard to believe that I could get 2 trannys with EXACTLY the same issue going into fifth.

Sigh

Okay when sitting in the car, if I mimic doing a 4th to 5th gear shift as if I were driving, it does definitely have the same issue. It feels like it blocks the shifter from moving to the right, like the lockout is not working right or something.

If I shift in a different patter than from 4th to 5th.... say I am in neutral and go straight to the right and up, it goes in fine. I will try this driving later today, haven't had it on the highway yet. Maybe I need to try double clutching and going from neutral to fifth while driving.
