Default Do bad CV axles creak?

Hey all,

My 1999 Accord is making a rhythmic creaking sound at low speeds. Took him in to get some other stuff done and the mechanic told me that's a sign the CV axle's going bad. I know my axle boot is torn, and I also know what a CV clicking sound is like (had the other one go bad a few years back). So is the creaking an actual warning sign, or is this guy just making stuff up?

I'm swapping it out myself either way, but it'd be useful to know.

does it get louder with speed ? Creaking in general tends to be ball joints

No, it's loudest at around 4-5 mph and goes away at higher speeds.

Creaking ball joints wouldn’t make a “rhythmic” noise. Just when the suspension goes up and down.

Could be axles.

UPDATE: Thanks for your input-- problem is solved. The creaking started happening at other speeds, so I took off my front wheels to try and get a look at what was going on. Didn't look like my rotor guard plates were dragging, but I poked them a little. Basically I couldn't tell what was up, but when I tightened the lug nuts back up, the noise stopped completely. Not sure if that means it was the rotor guard after all or if the guys at the shop just didn't put my wheels on tight. Either way, no problems since!
