Default 04 Accord Ex V6 A/T Transmission Question

65,950k Miles

The other day the wife was driving the car and lost 1st & 2nd gear.

I work for Mitchell1/Snap-On and ran the diagnostics on the car with a Solus.

The code is P0966...no other codes.

AT Clutch pressure control solenoid B.

Like a dufus I picked up the solenoid before testing the old solenoid with a volt-o-meter but will do that when I do the tear down.

My question is...

Has anyone replaced this solenoid before and is there anything that i need to look out for? I have access to all the OEM data and have the repair procedure in hand but it says there are ATF lines that go to this solenoid. Do I need to do anything special with these lines?

I am decent at donig my own work and dont forsee any trouble with this repair. I just wanted to check in before I dove in.

Thanks All,

Alex

So far...

I pulled the air box, battery and battery tray.

I dont see any ATF lines but I know tis thing goes directly into the tranny. The two questions I have are...

1.) The OEM repair data calls for the tranny mount to be removed. Do I need to support the transmission before removing this mount or will the rear mount and engine support the weight while this mount is out? The OEM data does not mention any support needed.

2.) When this selonoid comes out I know there are tubes feeding it and o rings inside...does it come out as one unit or is everything just stacked underneath and bolted down so I have to friggin play jenga getting this stuff all back in?

Thanks for any help guys.

Alex

Edit: If I dont hear back...im diving in and will post my findings LOL.

ok, sorry to take so long. did a bit of digging to refresh my memory.
the one i played with was an 03 K24.
now keep in mind that we are an independent honda specialist shop and used to rebuild the **** out of the 98-02's, i have not seen a single one of this generation in for any trans problem until this car.

it came in with 3 codes, 2 shift solenoid and a pressure control. the testing for them takes all of 10min. simple click test, power feed, and wire check stuff. and ohm the linear. the car would drive fine for days. then randomly act weird. stay in gear, not shift at all, not down shift, etc. everything in my power to do says it is all ok. an intermittent solenoid? sure. 3 random solenoids with random problems givin honda's excellent electronics history. i don't think so.
in the end, the only answer, and most reluctant answer, i could come up with was the ecu. but we only have immobilizer control for the 5gen lude. so i sent her to the dealer. also hoping whatever dealer tech gets it will be able/willing to swap an ecu out and double check before selling it to her.

i was really hoping for a tsb/recall when i started checking into this, but there is none.
and i have never heard back from the customer about it either.

oh, and 1-they have 4 mounts, you can have 1 off no prob, but it will sag and it will be easier to start the bolts back by jacking it back up flush

2-i never did pull solenoids out of it. but on the previous generation, there are basically 2 kinds, 1 is a flush mount with a gasket like a vtec solenoid, and the other is a tube with a few o-rings along it. if you do pull one it should be fine. honda keeps their stuff pretty 'user friendly'

Thanks for the detailed reply bro.

The only code is the pressure control soledoid B, the B connector does look a bit dirty and the bolts are slightly rusty. I will test everything and plug the new one in. At this point its not covered on my extended warranty so I may just plug the new solenoid in anyway just for piece of mind and to have it all freshened up.

I have it all torn down ready to R & R tomorrow. I will post up if anything comes up.

I appreciate the help.

No issues at all.

Support the tranny from below, Remove airbox, battery, battery tray, upper trans mount, remove the old Solenoid, remove any bits of old gasket, replace, put everything back together.

Done and Done.

so that fixed it?
lucky you then. easier with the V6 too. the I4 has a lot of internal solenoids behind an end cap. i'm starting to not like the new honda.

Sure did.

I R&R'd the solenoid, fired her up and like magic i had 1st, 2nd and 5th back.

Put about 50 Miles on her today, some around town, some highway...uphill & downhill, so far all is well and back to normal.
