Aftermarket gear failures
If any of you guys have had problems with any of your aftermarket gears/final drives please speak up.
Spoon, ATS, SRR, Gear-x, MFactory, Quaife, etc, etc.
If you have had a problem please provide as much information as possible.
Please know beforehand that no company is perfect. There are always going to be some reported failures. So just because some guy on the internet had problems with his final drive on his 600whp boosted gsr with slicks. That doesn't mean that all products are garbage.
I am going to ask that manufacturers and representatives of said companies to please stay out of this thread. I will do my best to watch over. I will maintain a complete neutrality regardless of what I run in my gearbox. I also would like to not have this turn into a "product battle." Any failures to comply will result in administrative action.
The objective of this thread is to inform the members on honda-tech about the quality of available products. This thread is to you guys benefit, if it goes sour, it goes to the brown-hole.

I have had a quaife that cracked the collar where the axle goes in. Axle kept poping out.

I have seen 2 circuitworx final drives wear a groove in the pinion shaft on the bottom where it sits in the case. 1-2 months of use
bought a replacement and broke the teeth off after some serious wheel hop due to a loose motor mount.

Thank you for posting that, that is the first official post after 7 months that fits the exact criteria of what I am looking for. I will contact the user and hope that he can provide me with a few details of his setup, and the outcome after reporting back to the manufacturer.

Yeah I know but I had purchased it a few years back. Actually to be specific, I was told that it didn't like hoping curbs. Well, I did 3 races at Daytona without any problems but Daytona is completely smooth. Now only after 3 laps of Sebring, it gave out. Go figure. I'll post some pics when I tear it apart.

quaife lsd in ys1 cable tranny shattered. shattered where both axles slide in and sheered teeth off... only makin 617whp on 22in slicks... STOCK AXLES at that... figured those would go first lol. had it preloaded and ready to go dont know why it broke.

You should contact Special Projects MS for their Gear-X straight cut 4.9 final drive. It was specifically designed to take the abuse of rough pavement. Its doing well in the rough and bumpy Tarmac rally stages in Ireland when other known FD's weren't even lasting a whole rally. And their 6.33 for the K series is doing fenominally well in the gravel/tarmac rally stages I do here in the US.

LOL, I was talking with Jeff/KIWI today about the Ireland failures.
I'll dig up the ATS and SRR failures I've replaced with GearX for SCCA ITA racing.

I've had similar experience with SRR final drive as well.. Supercharged GSR motor 3rd pass down the track and it cleaned the teeth off the shaft. Never using SRR again.

GB, Those look to be metallurgical failures.. (And I would assume that they {MFG} won't stand behind something that they make a $$$killing on but then say it's "For offroad-use ONLY")
Which brings up another variant: Double failure..
One spends great deals of cash for a particular gear/gear-set/whole trans and BAM! Failure (1)..
Then what does one have on their side? Another failure with the sales rep/NON-language speaking 'customer service'? Failure (2)
I'm leaning toward the individual that can't just call his sponsors 'hotline' and order up another item. Rather, The person that has to adjust his vacation time (if any) to love his/her passion. What consolation is there for these?

mfactory gear failure on the dyno after 3 miles from new!. replaced both and then 5th failed. called mfactory and they told me that they were installed incorrectly and thats what caused the teeth to sheer off the gear! they would give me warranty if i shipped the box from ireland to usa and had them install the kit and then shipped i back to ireland again...... could have a proper ppg kit for that price. i dumped the gear kit.....

For all we know you could have an engine making 500 ftlbf of tq, and you warmed the engine up w/o warming the trans and cold snapped it + installed it wrong.

ppg? your post is inconclusive. What transmission is this? How did you install them?

no seriously im building boxes for 9 years now and after two or three years anyone could have it right. even if the main shaft was clearenced wrong it still wouldnt smash teeth off like that. they are one of the easiest boxes to build.
i put the car in first gear and went up through the box under full accelleration and when i was half way through the revs in fourth it simply tore the teeth off. no jumping the clutch or anything funky.
if you read the mfactory site they rant on about better tolerences and harder gears than honda but yet ive been terrible rough on the standard honda boxes and broke NOTHING in three years of hillclimbing and the hills are rough and bumpy so it doesnt add up.
