Is your transmission knocking when you idle? Is it loud? I fixed mine (Pics + Parts)

For the past year my transmission was making a knocking noise when ever my car idled, and when I pressed in the clutch the noise went away. However when i started to roll again in 1st gear the tranny came back again with the loud noise.

So I did some research and askin around and found out what it was!

Its the tranny main shaft bearing. You know, that shaft that comes out of the tranny with the splines on it? Yeah, that one. Inside the tranny the bearing for that blew up! You can see in the pics that the little metal gurtel that separates the balls actually blew up and the bearings were pushed together. I decided to order a new one from Acura and slap it in. After sealing up the tranny and putting it back in the car, the tranny was SILENT! IT WORKED!

On to the pics....

First open your tranny and take the gears out. At the bottom of the mainshaft, youll find the bearing you need to replace inside the tranny housing.

Its number 16 in that pic.

I also replaced the bearing on top of the mainshaft too, just incase. Although the my bearing was fine, I thought it couldnt hurt. Its part number was 91004-P21-003. Number 17 in this pic...

I had a D-tranny that chewed up both of those bearings. The top mainshaft bearing was in the worst shape actually. Each ball in the bearing had material missing from its surface. But the gaurd peice was still in tact (on both bearings).

I'll snap some pics tonight. I still have that bearing sitting around in the garage...somewhere.

thats amazing that the car still drove. How hard is the tranny to mess with?? I have a tranny problem. The car goes in and out of gear just fine, even measures the speed but doesnt get to the wheels. I was told the axles might have come out but.. sure as shit.. they are in all the way. So, I was thinking differential. Looking at your tranny taken apart...looks like everything has to come out to change the differential. Should I have a shop do it? I dont know trannys but i do have common sense and can be mechanically inclined.

Honda trannys arent really that hard to mess with, i watched my friend take apart one and learned everything i needed to know. Just break it down slowly and take the parts out with caution and make sure you remember how things go back together. I highly recommend ziploc bags to keep all the little bolts and things separate and labeled. You dont want to put everything back together and be like "Oh shit, where did this come from?!". Just take your time and be patient, dont put the gears in any dust or dirt, keep things organized and clean. Dont be affriad to do something over again to get it right, because if it doesnt feel right, it prolly isnt.

There really isnt much to a tranny once you get it open, just take a look around and make mental notes of things.

Here's what mine looked like. Sounded like and felt like driving a tank until 2-3 gear.

do these bearings have to be pressed out? or pulled out using a puller? or do they just come off?

Just tap around evenly and it should come out with a few whacks with the BFH.

The top bearing should just slide off. If it seems stuck, take a blow dryer to the top and let it heat up a little. That should help it enough to come off.

Alright I got it done also, i must admit it was extreamely simple. By the way the part number for the bottom bearing is incorrect, it is a "PS1" not a P21. Oh and one more important thing, I strongly recoment that u should also replace the oil seal for the bottom bearing. Wow after i did this my car is so quiet now https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gifhttps://i225.photobucket.com/albums/...db1_01/005.jpg

excellent. this has GOT to be what's wrong with my tranny. did yours rattle/grind at high RPMs as well?

can you guys confirm these bearings are NOT pressed on? i may just attempt to tackle this myself. i hear separating the case is a pain due to a large snap ring?

yes the top mainshaft bearing has to be pressed in. http://is.rely.net/1-92-29998-l-1gbM...AmVuBW3hGg.gif

Thank god for this thread. I have the exact same syptoms...

My transmission would make that rattling noise at idle, or when the a/c was on... which was wiered. The noise then soon went away when I pushed in the clutch in as well. I figured it was the throw out bearing, so I replaced that... but to no avail, the problem was still there. I am about to drop the trans again and replace the pilot bearing and the spring that is located on the clutch release fork... maybe my bearing is bad as well?

This is a great thread! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Not always. Most of the time you can just pick it up. The worst I've seen is having to use a screwdriver or turn the shaft upside-down.

The one in the clutch housing does have a slight interference fit. You can use a 9" 3/8" drive extension and hammer it out from the clutch side.

Mista Bone 11-19-2007 09:55 AM

EVERYONE now.........

if you have a bearing explode like that, you MUST flush out the gearshafts as the oil ports will get clogged. Also need to pull all the case bearings out and clean.

Clogged oil ports for input shaft bearing failure is what leads to outer mainshaft bearing failure and countershaft bearing failure.

https://i107.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P8150032.jpg

Shotgun cleaning kit really helps to dislodge all the crap in the bores of the shafts.

What do you mean by just picking it up? I was refering to installing the new bearing. The best and correct way is to use a bearing spliter to remove the old one, and a press to install the new bearing. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
