terrible throttle response (stock b16a), and engine health
new guy here....
i have a stock b16a in my 96 del sol. i bought the car new, everything is stock, and for almost as long as i've had the car the throttle response has been "twitchy." if i go 50% - 0% - 50% throttle in quick succession the engine hesitates and it throws the car into a sort of oscillation, it's very hard to describe. what could be causing this? could it be as simple as a loose throttle cable?
on a related note, what are the factors that determine the health of an engine? are there tests i can do on my own to find out? other than the throttle response issue the engine feels relatively strong, i'm just wondering what i can do to quantify it.

i had the same problem when i had the stock b16a too. my guess is its NOT your throttle body, because i went out and bought a new one and it didn't do jack.
From watching my VAFC, it seems like the car "bogs" when you go from around 12% throttle to under 10%, I can't seem to make the transition smooth.
i'm guessing your o2 sensor is bad, you ECU is jumping from open loop to closed loop and can't get a reading of the o2 sensor? Another possible source of my problem was the injectors, i was using obd0 injectors in an obd2 car/harness.
anyone have any other guesses?

everything on the engine/car is stock, including the injectors. so it can't be the wrong type of injectors unless they screw up BIG time at the factory.
wouldn't a bad o2 sensor light up the engine light? a few months after i bought the car i replaced the fuel filter, but it did not improve the throttle response.

To answer your second question;
Aside from tearing your motor down, you can run a compression test or leakdown test, which will give you a reasonable idea of what condition the motor is in.
As for thebog;
Have you tampered with the TPS? I wouldnt rule the O2 out. The O2 can go bad without the triggering the CEL.
