What are some signs of a bad battery?

I have a battery I suspect has some problems, but I cant prove it.

How will an unhealthy/rerminally dead battery act? What will the resting voltages be? What should it be after a set period of time? Why does my CTEL charger go straight to "charged" indication when I put it on there? How do I test it outside of a car? It's heavy!

The battery's only real job is to start the car. The alternator takes over after the car is started. It keeps the battery charged. Normally when a battery starts to go it starts leaking and the corrosion builds on the positive terminal.

Ahh, cool.

Could a battery in a car with a bad alternator somehow get ruined?

Yes.

Do you have the capability of taking the battery to a local parts store and have them load test it for you?
