water pump seal...
 

I'm about to install a new water pump and was wondering if I should put this type of rtv sealant around the seal:

It does not mention anything on the packaging about what temperature it is good up to. If I were to use it would it go more on the actual rubber seal or on the surface of the metal itself? I'm just doublechecking to be sure I dont experience any leaks. Thanks

It would be ok. There should be no leaks. I've used that silicone on many water pump jobs and have had no problems. You will be ok.

Well its out now. My next concern is how important it is to get all the old material off the surface. Will I be ok just wiping it down with some degreaser/cleaner or do I really need to scrape?

Need to scrape it. Use a gasket scrapper or a razor blade and carefully scrape it.

don't put any of that sealent on the water pump since it's a oem piece(I'm hoping), according to the helms manual you should only put a little under the gasket of the water pump. which honda has already done. I don't put any sealent on my water pump gasket and I've driven for about 40,000 miles without a single leakage. bad case senceiro would be that the some of that sealent will get stuck inside the cooling tracts of the cooling system causing possible overheating. bad idea in my opinion.

Be sure to scrape off the little gasket pieces that stick to the block. Use a gasket remover spray so help get it off if needed. I always use Ultra Black to help seal up the gasket and water pump even if it is new.

It's really not necessary to use any rtv imo, but I guess if you want peace of mind it cant hurt. The rubber gasket seals it up pretty well plus i dont believe the stock one uses rtv either, at least there wast any when i replaced my pump.

I doubt it would hurt, but the O-Ring will seal perfectly all by itself.

You're using a new one, right?
