Default Warning light advice

A warning light has appeared on my dashboard (an orange engine-shaped light), which according to the manual means that the "engine's emissions control systems may have a problem". What is likely to be causing this? The car (Civic) had a new exhaust & catalytic converter fitted only a few months ago.

The day before this light came on I had a new battery fitted, and I am wondering if this could somehow be causing the problem - dodgy connection?

No, I would like to hear from anyone else who has had the problem.

Absolutely. That's why I am using the internet to ask the question.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I suspect you are referring to more modern models. There is no code, just a light.

What year is the Civic? Searche how to pull CEL (check engine light) codes for the generation (year) of civic you have. There is a code (or codes) stored in the ECU if the CEL is on.

Thanks, that has pointed me in the right direction. Such is my lack of knowledge that I didn't even know of the existence of the ECU, let alone what it was. But as DCFIVER so helpfully observed, thanks to the wonders of the internet no-one needs to remain in ignorance!

this forum isn't the best place to look. You need to try some video guidance. Eric the Car Guy on YouTube is a great place to start when it comes to mechanics basics.

After 1996, Due to On Board Diagnostics 2 (OBD II).

The orange engine shaped light is the "Check Engine Light" (CEL).
It indicates that something has gone wrong.

There are a bunch of sensors that feed information to the ECU (engine control unit)/ ECM (engine control module).
When one of those sensors feed information that do not fall within certain pre-programmed parameters, it stores a code.

If the failure repeats then the repeated code forces a CEL or mal-function light to go on.
If the failure is severe then it will flash the CEL to indicate that engine damage can happen very soon.

When there is a CEL, a code reader or scanner can communicate with the ECU and pull the codes out.
That code relates to the type of failure. It may be related to certain parts.
It doesn't mean the part is necessarily bad and needs to be replaced.
It does indicate where to start troubleshooting the issue.
Codes can be looked up on the internet.

Many youtube videos available on how to work on cars/engines.

Good luck

When a cel like comes on you check the ecu for codes and diagnose the issue. You'll then either repair or replace the failed/defective/damage/fucked up part
