Turbo overheating problem, help!?
 

Ok, I've been boosted for 2 days now and the car overheats. 10 minutes into driving (city driving), the temp needle will slowly but steadily climb from normal to very hot. I don't think I blew the headgasket.

At first I thought I had a bad fan relay, so I found the relay and swapped it with my buddy's Si and no luck same thing, had to drive back home. Then I thought maybe there's no signal going into the radiator fan so I plugged that wire into the AC fan and the AC fan was blowing full steam, I plugged it back into the radiator fan and this time, the fan seems to work. I thought it was solved (bad connection).

Took the car back for another drive and same problem, AGAIN! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif Took the car home, popped the hood and the fan was working. I don't know what to do, somebody please suggest something..

Some info: Built B16A2 EM1, custom turbo set-up, dual core radiator.

Do you have an egt (exhaust gas temp. sensor)... you could be running lean... that's run hotter and possible cause overheating...

Is the turbo water cooled?

Also just to cover basics... Are both the rad. hoses hot?

If the upper one is cold then it's your thermostat...

your sensors my not be calibrated for a turbo bud... it may think its overheating but it might not be at all

Check your thermostat too

All right I have more info on my problem:

The radiator fan is now rewired to be "on" as soon as the ignition is on, which means it's blowing all the time. You would think it would take care of it but no...

If I turn the car on when it's cold, the temp will quickly rise to normal and stay there. Then after 15 minutes of city driving it will start to climb, slowly but I will be way overheating in less than 5 minutes. When I go on the highway, it goes down. However today on the highway, traffic went from 75 to 50 and it started overheating again!! To the point I was thinking of pulling over. Then traffic cleared up and temps were down to normal after 5 minutes of driving at 80.

I don't know what it could be. I have a FMIC but it's really not that big (don't know the specs by https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emlove.gif). And as I said earlier I upgraded to a dual core radiator. I know the radiator is somewhat restricted by the FMIC but I highly doubt that it's not up to the task of cooling the car down when I'm just cruising in the city, especially that the fan is now blowing all the time.

Other info: I'm tuned to 12.0:1 so I'm not running lean. Both the upper and lower radiator hoses are very hot too. I first realized the car was overheating after the turbo timer went off and my coolant tank pissed itself completely so it definitely is overheating, it's not my sensors that are bogus..

I'll check the thermostat but I have the feeling it's not it, what else could it be??

well if you check your water pump and its fine, then it could be that you need more cooling power, as far as then fan switch; didnt you say it was working?

please never speak again unless you have had personal experience with the problem. that statment is so wrong i dont even know where to begin.

and as for the overheating. test your thermostat and rebleed the cooling system

What would be my options? Ditching AC and get a one of those huge radiators? Race coolant?

All right, I'll check the thermostat and water pump and hope it's one of the 2. Damn, I never heard of street-driven turbo Honda's having those kind of problems before..

cooling options would be a better radiator and maybe 2 electric fans.

Hey man sounds like my old prob i had two probs is the Turbo water cooled if so unblug the two lines u have going to it and cap them off try that and if not. Ur thermostat is no good change it for a HONDA one not a Jobber one. And if that does not work some were u have a restriction could have a bad rad.

Id try unhook the lines to the turbo the colant ones and if thats not it try the thermostat and rad cap
