Transmission Questions LS vs. ITR, Synchro Questions too!
I am trying to decide on the transmission for my next build. I already have an LS transmission from and old setup and i know it is in decent shape.
I have looked at many gear combinations and i would either like the LS transmission with a 4.785 final drive or a USDM ITR transmission which has the 4.4 FD.
1. I found some sources that say the LS has very weak syncros. Is that true?
2., Also, is it possible to put an itr diff and final drive into an ls tranny?
I cant decide if it is worth doing the work to the LS tranny or if i should just buy an ITR tranny. Doing the work doesnt bother me at all i am just worried about the final quality of the transmission.

if u can afford it just get a 4.785 final itr. it has a gsr 4th a 5th gear so high way isnt so bad. acceleration is great and they have dual friction syncro's than can take alot more beating than the ls{yes there weaker}.

LS synchros are the same as the B16, GSR, and Type R, except that the B16, GSR and Type R transmissions have a double cone 2nd gear synchro.
ITR 4.785 FD transmissions are a piece of work, and definitely worth grabbing. I would just grab a Type R.

That is EXACTLY what i needed to know. Thanks man. I am going to pick up a B16 tranny and throw in an ITR LSD.

You will need a 4.4 ring gear from a GSR or Type R in order to just throw it in there, bolt pattern on the differential is different. LS/B16 have the same pattern, and GSR/Type R pattern is different from the LS/B16.

I new about the final drive bolt pattern differences from my previous research on doing the LS final drive swap.
I do have two 4.4 ring gears from diffs i picked up a long time ago. I never knew if they were from a GSR of B16. Hopefully one is from a GSR.
Another thing i wanted to double check on is the counter shaft. The 4.4 B16 and 4.4 ITR/GSR ring gears have different bolt patterns/I.D. but either would mate up to the countershaft correctly right?

If you did, it wasn't a GSR transmission. (or differential/ring gear at least) The GSR/Type R have a smaller inside diameter ring gear, the LS/B16 is larger.

It will mesh correctly as long as it has the same number of teeth as the one that was in there, only difference is the bolt spacing.
