Timing belt tension?
OK, i've tried to adjust my timing belt tension several times according to my cheapo manual.
loosen tensioner pulley, turn crank 3 teeth(cams) counterr clockwise, tighten tensioner bolt. the belt still seems to flap around (when running), rather than flow in a smooth, tight manner. am i screwing up somehow, or is this "flapping" normal??? https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif I really dont wanna remove all the belt covers again and MANUALLY push on the tensioner pulley. |

I've never heard of doing it like that. I manually tighten mine. I know in the D series manual it was talking about using a tension gauge but I'm pretty sure that's not necessary since I've never used one and never had problems.

its pretty simple you probably skiping a teeth on the waterpump side. its pretty simpe to not install it correctly. it shouldnt be flapping should be pretty tite.

yah, thats what i though, like a smooth ,snake like motion. not a flag waving type crappy motion.

you could always use a coat hanger and pull up the spring while tightening the tensioner bolt to give a lil more tension

I have seen this before. If the head has been milled it can be loose. But as someone else just said, Tension it like normal then pull up on the tensioner slightly and torque the 14mm bolt. You don't want it too tight, but if too slack it can jump when de- accelarating.

okay this is the way it should have been done..your motor turn counter clockwise...
so you need to slide the T-belt in this order... oil pump sprocket, tensioner, water pump,............pull the exhaust side of the belt as hard as you can and slide it over the exhaust cam gears, then slide the rest to the intake... turn the crank pulley 5-6 times, COUNTERCLOCKWISE....loosen the tensioner bolt by half a turn...turn it again 3 teeth, then re-tightened the tensioner bolt... you need to get the belt slide it the right way the first time, otherwise, it'll never fit tightly no matter how tight you pull the tensioner... NEVER TURN THE CRANK PULLEY CLOCKWISE... stan |

is there a reason behind not turning it clockwise? I had my motor on the stand while working on it i turned it clockwise quite a few times. very slow but at least full rotations. it didnt do anything to the motor. what would it do if it does turn clockwise?????

The counterclockwise rotation of the motor also allows for natural tension on the belt. I always retension it per the helms and I havent had any problems. I always test it by trying to pull the belt off the cam gears once the belt is placed under tension. If it slides off easily then it needs more tension. HTH
