stripped engine mount threads helicoil or bigger bolts?
i ve just notticed that my driver side engine mount bolts are stripped.
only 2 top ones not the bottom bolt. went to napa to see how much it cost to get helicoil kit its 67 bucks without the drill bit. kinda expensive at the moment for me. is there an alternative like rethreading it for bigger bolt instead? and what parts/bolts/tools are needed. is there a bolt available from honda in a next size up? from a different engine maybe? |

I honestly did this, I bought the kit used the two springs and returned it. They didnt notice

Just use the Helicoil kit. I got one from O'Reilly auto parts for $42. It you got to a larger bolt you'll have to drill out the bracket. And the heads on the new bolts may hit the upper portion of the bracket. I actually went to a M10-1.50 instead of the normal M10-1.25. The 1.50 uses a larger bit so you are sure to get all the old thread material out.

With something of that statute, i would opt to not use a helicoil, MAYBE a timesert. I would probably honestly just drill the mount out a bit, then tap it for the next size up and it would be good as new for nearly free.

Drill and re-tap for bigger bolt, you can get the bolts at any "fastener" shop. 94

went to local NAPA and got the bigger bolt tap washers and drill bit. cost me about 20 bucks compared to 67 dollars napa wanted for helicoil. and it seemed much easier as well.
btw how would 2 top bolts strip and not the bottom one? bent frame because of an accident? |

so i thought :)
went and got a cobalt drill bit from sears that said to be for hard metals put it in my drill and try to make a hole bigger but theres not even a scratch on the engine mount and the drillbit is already dull. what kind of drillbit do i need to get? |

A cobalt bit should work, but you may need a drill press, slower drill speed and "drilling oil".

So we tried drill press. Didnt even scratch a surface. Drill bit is toast. Wtf is this mount made of? Adamantium? I tried to use a file that thing just slides on the sirface.

update.
engine mount 0 drill bits -4 i tried cobalt bit machine shop tried drill press another machine shop tried drill press with carbide bits one got chewed up another cut it half way and got chewed up as well. so i dont know how any of you guys drilled thru the engine mount must been using some crazy drill bits. |

me 2 ^ sry but .... i got the same problem one broken bolt would like to know what people have done havent tried anything yet
my dad said he has this bit might be called "easy out" dont hold it to me but it drills into the bolt center and backs it out of the hole any one used one of these? |

if they used a real carbide bit and it got chewed up on a drill press then i dont know what to tell you
try a titanium drill bit in two steps one just a bit bigger than the hole then one the size hole you are tring to enlarge it to use a slow speed with lots of pressure and hydraulic oil, i had to drill tru a honda accord rotor bolt and did not have a titanium bit and let me tell you never again went to home depot and made my life easier and got a titanium bit |

I ended up using coil and same size bolt.
Although i am pleased to know that my entine mount will not break lol. |

2 bolts out 3 snapped on my B18b ek hatch and that was the worst thing ever for me. First i pulled the driver side mount the lift the motor a bit to get in to the mount holes on the block. I used a carbide 1/8 drill bit and got the hole goin after 3 drills i had a deep enough hole for me to put a easy out and crank the motherfu****. The other one i had to helicoil. If u retap it for a defferent size bolt make sure it goes tru the mount first lol. Heilcoil are very strong and maybe stronger then just an alum thrd.
