Alternator / wiring problem?
Okay, heres the deal. I was driving my 4th gen hatch (91 si w/ d16a6) yesterday in the rain, all of the sudden the radio starts turning off then back on. Then the gauges (tach first) started to die, come back on, die, come back on. My headlights were already on, then I turned them off the conserve power until I could get off the highway. Next thing I noticed was that while using the turn signals, the gauges would start jumping to 0- to whatever it was supposed to be. I get out, turned car off and couldnt get it to start. Ended up push starting it and got it back to my friends apartment.
So, I locate an alternator just in case, recharge the battery and go for a spin, everything was working fine until about 15 mins later we came back, parked it and couldnt get it to turn over. At all, nothing whatsoever. Couldnt push start it, nothing.
So we throw the new alternator in. Running fine, and to make sure that the new alternator was good, I disconnected the negative wire to the battery and it ran like a champ, the headlights were brighter than ever, guage cluster lights as well. Real test time, turned it off, COULDNT GET IT BACK ON. Jumped it again, left it connected to my buddies tahoe for 15 mins. As soon as we disconnected the jumper cables, the car died. Immediately after doing so, the alternator started smoking. After all of this, we couldnt even jump it to get it back on.
Obviously I need a new battery AND alternator now, but....
Honestly, Im at my wits end. I cant figure out what the **** is up. Shoot me some ideas, cause I dont know if its a wiring problem and the Alternator and battery or what, but before I throw another of each in there and have them **** out on me, I just wanna make sure that all of my bases are covered. I appreciate any and all quick replies that you guys have, seeing that Ive gotta get back to school tonight (2 hours away).
