Is it usually recommended to use any kind of sealant on the valve cover gasket for a D16 SOHC Engine?

The repair manual for my vehicle (UK built Rover 216 with a D16Z2 SOHC Engine) says not to use sealant with the SOHC gaskets. However, it says to use a bead of sealant with the DOHC types.

What is the reason for this? Do you agree?

apply a small pea size bead of black rtv sealant (works better/longer for components exposed to oil) to the bottom flat part of the surface circled in red.

I use Permatex grey on mine. Works just fine.

you should never use any liquid gasket on the VC gasket except where the picture inthezoneAC posted above.
