rod bearing keeps smashing
i have a gsr that i am replacing the rod bearings in. We go to torque the rod bolts to spec and then we try to move the crank shaft. Nothing happens. It just jams. We took the bearings out and on the edge of both bearings look smashed. The crankshaft journals look good though. Could it be that it just wasnt in there straight or what? I just wanted to ask before I go and screw up two more new perfectly good rod bearings... TIA

Re: rod bearing keeps smashing (Mugen112)
You are using the wrong size bearings. I assume you have some aftermarket bearings and they are probably 25 over or even 50 over. Get std size rod bearings. |
we compared them and there actually wider. would that make any sence at all? do they sell wider bearings? i thought for bigger bearings they just made them thicker, not wider.

Yeah, those are the wrong bearings. Because the bearing is wider the edges are cutting in the filets on the crankshaft. |
Get the correct bearings and Plastigage them to check for clearances instead of just rotating the crankshaft.
|
If the plastigauge shows the bearings are too loose, can I just tighten the rod bolts down tighter to get the clearances closer? I know your supposed to buy thicker bearings, but is it possible to do it the ghetto way?
|
Yeah, you can do it the ghetto way. But you'll be rebuilding your block in a few thousand miles. One of the mottos I live by is this, "anything worth doing, is worth doing correctly the first time."

If I recall correctly, he B18C GSR engine has narrower rod bearings than the B18A or B. What bearings do you have?

I would like to clear that up too. I have used some rod bearings on a D16 that said on the box "D16, B18 A/B/C" Honda definitely has different parts numbers for GSR, D16, and B18A/B. I think I have some old OEM GSR bearings at home, also OEM LS's. I'll check widths and report back. >>><<< |
ls rod bearing are a bit wider than gsr

Look at 'BEW', C1/C5 have the narrowest rods. There's a chance they could even be D16 rod bearings, assuming they look almost the same width - d16s and b-series rod bearing diameters are the same. |
