problems with #3 cylinder..

my #3 cylinder is eating sparkplugs(electrode/insulator is melted/spotted, as if running too hot). my a/f gauge reads proper mixture under all throttle conditions, & the other cylinders seem to be running properly, although the other sparkplugs are looking whiter than i think they should. the sparkplugs are two steps colder than oem (for nitrous, but this problem is happening without the use of nitrous).

i switched the #3 fuel injector with the #1 injector, and judging from the #3 sparkplug it's still not running right. the #1 sparkplug (with the #3 injector installed) still looked just like cylinders 2 and 4, so the injectors seem to be fine.

i can't figure this out; any help is appreciated.

My car is doing the same thing. I'm not sure what the problem is. I did a compression check and the rings are definately shot. There is also a valve problem, worn guides or bad seals.

It could be running too hot on that cylinder and if you have deposits on the plug as well, you could have oil getting into the cylinder.

i know i definately have oil leaking past the valve seals, could this be the problem?

my compression still reads very high in all four cylinders. the engine is supposed to have ~55 thousand miles on it.

any idea why it might be running hot in that cylinder? the plugs are two steps colder than oem.

thanks for the input

The AF gauge won't pick up on a single cylinder lean condition b/c the sample it takes is based upon the average of all the cylinders' exhaust output.

Stick a IR temp gun on it and see how much the temp difference is b/w the exhaust runners.

well, i don't have an infared temp gun, but, i have figured out that what is happening is detonation at around 6000rpm at wide open throttle in the third cylinder only. but i still cannot figure out why, and i am not sure if it is due to ignition advance or a lean condition. the only way i thought it could be an ignition problem is if something was mechanically wrong with the distributor cap, and it seems to be in perfect working condition. so, at this point, im still thinking that it is because of a lean condition. i think the next step is to take the intake manifold off, check everything, and replace the gaskets.

thanks for the input. still looking for more!

Maybe you should back off the ignition timing a little.

What type of plugs have you been using?

the #3 cylinder is the hottest. because of the way the water flows from#1-#4. think it migth just be running a bit lean

for one air fuel ratio gauges suck ass bro.. so i wouldnt go by them.. goodluck with your problem https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
Btw: definetly do a compression test.

Alot of people I have talked to that have used bosch plugs have had problems....Maybe you should stick with ngk.
