Default Postion of resonator in exhaust piping

I was wondering if position of the resonator along the length of the exhaust piping mattered as far as exhaust note and raspyness goes.

I've heard people say to install the resonator closer to the header because it will quiet the exhaust note sooner. I figured if the sound is suppressed early, then it will increase in sound as it flows down the rest of the piping.

I'd imagine for a quieter note you'd want the resonator closer to the muffler end because then the sound will be deadened right before exiting out out the muffler.

I'm interested in getting some opinions.
