Overtorqued

Just wondering how bad overtorquing head studs could be. Mine were torqued at 60lb-ft then 80lb-ft.

I believe the correct toqrue specs for a B16 are 22lb-ft/63lb-ft.

I'm having some problems with my car and was wondering if this could be part of it.

Thanks,

Goldfingiz

Also, is it true that they can only be torqued once and need to be replaced? Someone is telling me I could have lifted the head right up under 12lbs of boost.

Jesus Christ!! Lay off the crack man.. heheh. Why would you risk damaging your engine or breaking a head bolt by overtorquing the bolts? You can damage/warp the head, damage the thread of the block, break a head bolt, damage the head gasket and good knows what else. What kind of problems are you having? Do not reuse THOSE bolts, get new ones. Those are streched and no good. If you want to know why get on the Tech info of the ARP bolts web site. Also have the head checked for deformation.

wow.......that is over torqued allot............

get a new set of head bolts and a new headgasket.......you might as well send the head out and have it checked for warping............

Re: Overtorqued (Goldfingiz)

I wasn't the one who torqued. My friend did it. I guess I'll have to get new bolts and do it to spec.

Anyway, here are the symptoms. The motor smokes. As soon as I start it, it starts smoking. It seems there is a pressure leak somewhere. I think I experienced "blow by." If I pull the oil dipstick, smoke comes from there too. The car also doesn't sound too healthy. Sounds like my CRX did when it needed a head gasket. I DID run the car without an intercooler. I thought I was going to be boosting 8psi and since there is snow on the ground, I figured I'd get away with a quick test drive to make sure everything worked. Unfortunately, when we took the car out to test it, it boosted 12 for some reason. First time I hit boost the smoke started. Didn't even give me a chance to get IC piping. I guess it could be anything...could be a ring (they're all new except for one oil ring because my friend accidentally bent the new one), could be the head gasket (although that is brand new too), could be the overtorqued head...who knows. I have to do a compression test.

Tell your friend to get the hell away from your car.

WHat has not been mentioned is that theres a sound coming from the head. Anyone who has a GSR with header knows it, its like loud valves, in this case, i think its a blown intake valve, casuing pressure to be realsed. Second, Black axis, did u ever make a mistake in your life? He accidently bent the oil ring, just so happens this friend of his is perhaps the only reason hes not paying $76/hour in labor plus parts at a shop. (which at this point might have reached into the thousands)

Blow By?? could be that your piston rings aren't holding up to the boost.
