Re: Odyssey - recommended timing belt replacement

Dealer installed tensioner today. The service mgr handed me the part when I checked out. He didn't comment on the obvious scratch I had made, though it must have been obvious what it was for. I'm thinking... 'trust but verify'

End of saga. Thanks for all the great advice.

Re: Odyssey timing belt replacement - UPDATE, advice requested

Here is a detailed video with step-by-step instruction on the replacement of the timing belt on the Honda Acura V6 J Series engine, including the replacement of the pulleys, tensioner, as well as the water pump and special tools needed to complete the job.

Hello everyone. I am new on here but not a newbie when it comes to engines/cars bikes etc... The question I have is I purchased a Car in Baton Rouge last week from a small car lot... The owner says the timing belt and water pump were changed 6 months ago. Well I get home take it to the shop and ask my friend to check it all out... It was a great deal on a 2006 Honda Odyssey with 158k miles.... He tells me it looks like the original belt from Honda. (see pic) I call the dealership I purchased and he shows me a receipt from Team Honda in BR that replaced the Timing belt and drive belt(dayco brand) but they did not change the water pump. I called Team honda to confirm and he says they dont do water pumps at the same time if they aren't leaking... Thats the craziest thing I have ever heard.... I thought it was standard practice.... Anyways does this belt look old to you? The shop here local is someone I trust and has been working on cars over 20 years. I am going to replace the Timing Belt and water pump with a gates brand kit I purchased!

Re: Odyssey - recommended timing belt replacement

Team Honda supposedly replaced the Timing belt at 137k miles... Does the belt look like it only has 21k miles on it? are they blowing smoke? Instead of 6 months ago it was last March 2012 ...well over a year ago

Another thing that really makes me wonder is that the owner of the small dealership says I know the service Mgr there at Team Honda and he charged me $600 to do all the work....He was mad that maybe he got messed over. Or maybe since they know each other did he right a bogus ticket? Or did the small car dealer get screwed over by Team Honda in BR?

I called Patty Peck Honda In Jackson MS and they said they def recommend replacing the water pump when they do a timing belt.

Regardless of all this... I want to change em anyways! The gates Kit was only $138 with water pump, tensioner etc.... The labor is $385... But I do want the small dealer to pay at least the labor and I will pay for the parts... I dont think thats asking to much?

Re: Odyssey - recommended timing belt replacement

Guess this puts this post back on top … doing a whole rack of stuff to my Odyssey starting tomorrow. 10 years old in April, (2004) EX-L with RES, 129,000 miles:

Timing Belt replacement which includes
- Timing belt
- Water pump
- Tensioners
- Coolant replacement
- New drive belts

Top of engine service -
- Spark plugs
- Coils
- Lifter cleaning and valve lash adjustment

Transmission Service
Replace Brake fluid
Replace tie rod ends and ball joints
Complete front brake job

Worth the money to make this beast go another 100k or more.

Hi StewC625

Is this your first time for changing these items in your car?

First change on the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, drive belts, valve adjustment and coils and tie rod ends/ball joints.

It was the third brake job (did the rears too), also third brake fluid change, at least the 4th or 5th transmission service.

In addition to all of the above, also replaced the bushings in the front suspension, and the motor mounts. Purrs like a kitten.
