Magnetic drain plug?
i have a Password magnetic drain plug in my tranny and when i pulled it out to change it to a new tranny i was putting in, it had a "afro" of small metal shavings on it. i thought it was just coming from the third gear grind the tranny had in it and thought nothing of it. now i have another ITR tranny in my car with no grinds, filled it with fresh Pennzoil 10w40 when it was installed. after a week or so i changed the fluid to Honda MTF. when i pulled the magnetic drain plug i had the same thing but not as much. is this normal?

since your new tranny had a stock honda plug in it by you changeing it to The Magnetic PLug you could just be catching old metal shavings from the previous driver.......

thats true. so what are the metal shavings coming from? grinding gears when your hand is faster than your foot? |
Re: Magnetic drain plug? (FdOoUoRr)
When you grind it's the synhcros that make the dreaded noise. The color should look gold due to being brass. Silver shavings can be bearing material, gears, Or anything else in the tranny other than the synchros. Micro shavings or metal dust is normal due to the metal to metal contact in the tranny. You just don't want to see chunks of metal floating around.

i cannot really tell whether it is gold or not. i think it was more of a silver color if i recall correctly. it is fine pieces of metal that are on it, there are no chunks. so this is normal? |

Brass isn't magnetic...

Re: Magnetic drain plug? (EnzoSpeed)
Yeah, how would brass stick to a magnetic drain plug? The only thing it could really be is little grinds off of the actual gears. My trans is literally FILLED with crap both brassy and irony looking--still shifts nice.

are all Honda manual transmissions like this? who else has a magnetic drain plug in their tranny?
|
Re: Magnetic drain plug? (FdOoUoRr)
there is already a fairly large magnet in the trannys from the factory, it usually accumulates a lot of shit on it. if a drain plug magnet gets a lot in a short amount of time, I would be a bit concerned. its hard to say some peoples opinions of just how much is excessive may be different you know?

Re: Magnetic drain plug? (Runnerdown)
the brass color in fluid is the dogteeth on the syncro a little is kind of typical silver is actual wear of bearings or parts, but brass color shouldnt be worried about unless its an enormous amt.
